As some of you may know, I got a new rescue bun yesterday! She is 4 months old, a tortoiseshell lop and only has 3 legs due to having had one amputated nearly 3 weeks ago due to a large and painful abcess. When I went to get her, she was in a fairly small indoor cage so didnt have much room to move around, and is VERY wobbly on her feet .. i think this is partially of course due to the loss of her right front leg, but also because she has been lying down recovering for quite some time. Her back legs arent particularly mobile when again I attribute to her recovery – i held her and manipulated her back legs and they feel fine and have a full range of movement. I am working on getting some pictures up ASAP – my phone’s camera is too good to upload images on this site!

She also has no litter tray currently as she cannot get into one, the most she can do movement wise is a few steps and then she usually falls forward – it’s like teaching a toddler to walk! She is such a sweetheart, so dosile and loving – any advice you can give me on getting her moving and doing a bit of physio would be appreciated

Also, Barney met her through the bars of her cage and they were licking each others noses! So sweet x

I’ve never dealt with a tripod bun missing a front leg, only a back leg.  I imagine this is a bit more of a challenge for her since she probably is less muscular in the front anyway.  You might join this yahoo group for disabled rabbits to see if someone on this list has experience with a tripod rabbit missing a front leg:

I really have no experience and thus, no advice. But I just want to say how great it is of you to take on a disable bun. Looking forward to pics of your new baby!

Aw haha! They do look alike.

I just had a thought how odd it will be for Belle when she goes to wash her face. It will take her a while to readjust to the change I guess but she will! Once she figures out her balance I think you’ll be surprised.
I truly hope her and Barney bond well. It will be a great help to her in grooming, confidence & general well-being really.

She’s beautiful. Please keep us posted about how she deals with her disabilty. It’s great of you to take her on. Three-legged dogs generally do well, but I’ve never even heard of a tripod bunny. It would really be great if Barney can help her wash and groom her face. Every female needs a facial now and then =)

Thanks for the replies everyone! Belle is flattered I will get her spayed when she is old enough (she’s only 4 months at the minute) which will hopefully give her a chance to get used to life as a 3 legged bun and learn to walk properly She’s a complete little darling, Barney wont leave her alone! Every moment he gets he has his face stuffed through the bars of her cage licking her nose Cute! She is eating fine, although the vets said she had lost a little weight – i put that down to being miserable cooped up without any bunny friends and with no bunny mamma! She is grooming the wound quite well, although she falls over a LOT which is adorable, she has to wait until she’s fallen over to eat as her remaining front leg doesnt appear to have enough stability currently to hold her very well. Going to be giving her plenty of exercise, we need to strengthen her remaining legs after her several weeks of cage rest at the vets Thanks again guys ^^

Do you think those crib bumpers would be useful at the moment? Or rolled up towels. To prop herself up?

ETA: I just found a Bunspace group for 3 legged rabbits. That would be a good one to join I would think!

Yeah definitely! She has some towels at the moment, she tends to slump in the corners of her cage for extra support, or onto her stuffed toy pig I’ve cut a big section out of her litter tray so that she can get in and out, and put some wee soaked hay in there. I hope she becomes litter trained fast, my mother is going to kill me when she returns from Greece and finds all her towels covered in wee Needless to say I have been emailing my parents pictures of Belle whilst they’ve been on holiday … the are smitten!! x
