My mum’s worried that the rabbits are going to be smelly.  I ensure her that with frequent cleaning, they won’t be? What are your experiences? Have you had any problems with odour?

Their urine can have a strong and unpleasant smell if they aren’t neutered. I don’t know about female rabbits, though, I have two boys. Their urine stopped smelling a while after they were neutered. I empty my rabbits’s litterboxes several times a day.

With spaying/neutering, the right litter and daily cleaning they won’t smell. The hay could be a problem though – that can smell and cause allergiesl

It takes diligence however on the owners part in cleaning – any animal or human will smell if their area is not maintained properly.

Unneutered males have stinky urine just by itself. This can be compounded if they are also spraying urine. You might be cleaning the litterbox everyday, but if there is urine on the walls or floor that you don’t see, that will permeate the house. So males really should be neutered if they are kept indoors.

Unspayed females may be stinky, or they may not. Females can also spray urine, and there is an increased chance of urine accidents if they are not fixed. Just like with males, you may not notice the accident, and it may begin to smell. And of course, females MUST BE spayed due to the high risk of uterine cancer.

A spay/neutered rabbit that has his/her area and litterbox cleaned out FREQUENTLY really should not have any offensive odor. There will be the smell of hay, and possibly wood if you use wood stove pellets for litter, but most of us don’t consider hay and wood smells offensive.

People that come to my house are often surprised that my bunny room has no smell at all. My buns are speutered. I use Yesterday’s News Pellets and clean the litter boxes whenever they start to look wet, every 2 days, sometimes every day.

My sister has hamsters that are very well cared for and cleaned often and they smell much, much worse than my bunnies.

I don’t clean my buns litter pan as much as anyone else and I’ve found he doesn’t smell as much as I thought he would. I put in a plug in air fresher in the room, not directly over him or near him, just in case. I clean his cage every 3 weeks since he is litter trained and doesn’t like his bedding so he hardly sleeps in it. He just pushes it all aside and sleeps on the floor lol. It really depends on how cleanly the rabbit is like my bun will constantly be cleaning himself and is very careful where he does his business while my friends rabbit will sleep in his litter pan and pee everywhere else so it gets onto him which stinks up the room. As long as you keep vigilant and get a routine going the stink will hardly exist.

My rabbit is a neutered male and he does not smell at all. I use yesterdays news for litter. I have one litter box in his cage that I clean every 2-3 days and two litter boxes outside his cage that I clean once a week. I have never ever had an odor problem with him. He also will urinate on his bedding (pillow cases) from time to time I think to mark territory and this never smells and I don’t even know he has done it until my weekly cage cleaning.

I had a guest stop by earlier today and had the buns in their cage. When the guest walked into the kitchen to get some water she was startled to find two bunnies peering out at her! And my house is TINY. (700 sq ft) She was telling me she was so startled and was shocked that they didn’t stink. I then let them out because she thought they were so adorable and she had no idea that you could even train them to use litter boxes lol. So no, they don’t stink

I will say though that when I first got Harley he was a 5 month old unneutered buck and he had a particular odor to him. And he stunk up my house. Got the snip snip that same week and it took care of the problem

Thanks everyone for replying, it seems that as long as they’re neutered and their habitat is cleaned frequently all will be ok

Apollo doesn’t even have a specific litter. I line his tray with newspaper and top it off with some crunchy oaten hay, and clean it every two days, it works fine for us! He doesn’t smell, and our guests adore him, they don’t understand how he is ‘so much like a dog’ but ‘uses a litter tray like a cat!’ Haha! Amuses me to no end!
