Hi guys I just got the test results to one of my rabbits stool samples. It came back positive for coccidia. He is laying in the cage not really interested in much. He eats like crazy but now it seems like his appitite isnt as big as it was before. Now his brother also has weird poo. And the other one has regular poo. The vet prescribed medication to all three. He says if all of them have been caged together then they all have to be carrying it. I let the breeder know and he said he doesnt trust vets and they will kill my bunnies because they are too young to have any medication ???? They are nine weeks. Hes freaking me out now. I had a rabbit die a few months ago from Giadia and some lower bowl ulcers. And now these three get sick! My husband is on his way to pick up the medication. What is the servival rate? Do you think they will make it? Is it something easily cureable???

He’s totally wrong – give your rabbits the treatment. They won’t survive if they aren’t treated but they will be fine once they are treated – you will need to do another fecal once treatment is completed.

The breeders pride just got hurt, ignore him. He obviously doesn’t care for his buns because the coccidia came from his rabbitry and a lot of rabbits are most likely infected ugh.

Ignore him, and treat the babies. They will die without treatment, that’s for sure.

You did your part in informing the breeder. At this point, I would conclude that relationship and move on with your rabbits. The breeder does not have their best interests at heart, and frankly, he’s rather ignorant about rabbit health if he is saying this to you.

The rabbits absolutely need these meds. Coccidia is not uncommon in rabbits from breeders. It is easily treated if caught early. If let go, the rabbits will pass within the next few months.

Thank you guys so much we got the treatment they started their first dose already and will har another fecal test in a week. Their poo is already looking so much better. This guy is a complete idiot. The only reason I bought them is because we have no rescues in our areas and didn’t want to risk buying another sick bunny off Craigslist. This guy has a company called “BunnyGrow” they collect rabbit manure and sell It at farmers markets. Isn’t this dangerous??? Shouldn’t someone know about his sick rabbits? All of them must be infected! I will update and let you know how the babies are doing in a few days. You guys really helped!

Long story short, breeders will often give very diluted doses of medication to their breeding rabbits and the babies. They are not going to pay to fully treat dozens of rabbits. The amount is so small that the parasites are reduced, but not eliminated. The buns are symptom-free as long as they are receiving this medication. But one you take them home, they are suddenly without these meds. This allows the parasites to flourish again, so shortly after bringing them home, that is when the symptoms reappear. You naturally think “Oh my gosh! My bunny was fine and now she’s sick! What am I doing wrong?!” Well, you didn’t do anything wrong. You did the right thing getting them meds ASAP.

Second morning of the albon and the bunny that was laying in the cage is now stuffing his face and scratching at the gate door to come out. We let them run around in an enclosed area for an hour and they are all doing great. Their poo already looks much better and is comin out in hard balls with the exception of a few sticky droppings. They breeder is now texting me saying he’s freaking out and really worried about his bunnies. I told him to get them tested. They obviously picked it up from him.

                      I agree 100% with Beka.

I’m glad your bunnies are doing better!

I’m glad he is showing some concern finally. If he really wants to get this under control, they will need to be tested, fully treated, and then tested again.

Also glad to hear your bunnies are doing better. Hope you get negative tests very soon.
