Pandas new xpen came in finally!! (One of our foster bunnies found a home so we are keeping Cocoa, YAY!)

Cocoa will be moving in with Panda after they are bonded.

Anyway, the Xpen is midwest brand and I got it set up, it looks great but the buns can fit through the bars and have gotten stuck!!

Idk what to do. Advice please? I can’t use NIC grids because I can’t find them ANYWHERE and don’t want to order them, I need to get this fixed tonight..

Do you have some boxes you can cut apart into 12 inch high strips and zip tie to the bars along the bottom? It’s not a long term solution but would help until you can figure out another option or they get bigger…

That sounds dangerous. I had to order NIC grids from amazon. They are trustworthy. Why are you apposed to ordering them? Target carries them but half the grids are useless (too big of holes). Maybe build a frame using safe wood and find some thick gage mesh

I like Beka’s cardboard idea. Another idea would be to get some mesh fencing from a hardware store and attach it to the outside.

Yeah, there are different options, but if you need something ASAP, the cardboard should work.

I’m not really opposed to ordering NIC grids and would like to have some but I needed to get it fixed tonight because I was afraid Panda was going to get stuck in there and get hurt. I got the wire mesh from Lowes and just finished setting that up. It is really nice but now I am worried about a few sharp edges. I have cut them down as much as possible and trying to cover them all so no one pokes an eye or anything.

I second the cardboard idea.  When I first got my little girl a friend had given me a x pen type thing for dogs but it was plastic and she was sooooo tiny that she could fit through the bars even though they were only about an inch and a half wide.  I covered the bottom row with cardboard and it worked just fine.  You will probably have cardboard shavings all over the floor (mine spent all night trying to gnaw her way out) but it did keep her in.  It’ll work until you can find something else.

I would just do the cardboard – once they get larger they will not be able to get through the slats and then you can just trash the cardboard…you only need it anyway until they are larger.

What kind of bunnies do you have, that they can fit through the x-pen? Are they babies?

I’m worried now because I am thinking of getting an x-pen and I don’t want mine to escape.

Your post is from a month ago so I’m curious if you’ve found the solution and how it’s working out. I’m setting up a x-pen tonight and I hope my little Simba won’t have the same problem. But just to share a good idea, I saw in a post somewhere during my bunny research someone had used clear plastic/plexiglass on the outside of the pen. That way the bunny can still see everything outside their pen without going through the bars and is chew/scratch-proof as opposed to the cardboard.
