I have a bonded pair who are sisters. They’ve always been fantastic eaters of hay, pellets and vegetables. A couple of days ago, Lucky just stopped eating pellets. I haven’t changed the brand and her sister Iris is still eating them so I know there’s nothing wrong with the food. They are 14 months old and this is the first issue that I’ve encountered. Any ideas?! Thank you!

Sometimes their eating habits change if they have dental problems. Might be worth having the vet look at her teeth.

Since she is still eating her hay and vegetables. I decided to buy a bag of alfalfa formula food just to see if maybe there was something about the last batch she didn’t like (I’ve gone through 4 bags of the Timothy formula and she didn’t like any of them). She ate the alfalfa pellets. So now I know it’s not that she can’t chew them, she doesn’t like something about this recent batch I bought. She is a bit of a princess but is it bad if she stops eating pellets altogether?

Rabbits that don’t eat pellets need a larger quantity and variety of veggies. I think it’s 10+ types and 60% more or something like that.

Here’s a semi recent thread about pellet free diets:
              https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aft/124976/afpg/2/Default.aspx
Just ignore the debate over how much it costs. It’s very location dependent. You can also do a search on pellet free diets on the forum.

Basically if you’re unable to provide the extra variety/amount pellet free is not a good way to go for you bunny. Pellets do provide a lot of nutrients and minerals that they need. What brand of pellets are you feeding now?

Thanks so much for the information you provided. I am feeding her Timothy’s Adult formula which is formulated with Timothy hay. Do you have other brand suggestions?

I use Oxbow for all my bunnies and I’ve never tried anything else. I believe Kaytee Timothy Complete is another decent one (only that line, some other Kaytee foods are not so good), American Pet Diner is recommended as well.

I will definitely try those out. She’s very happy and spunky so I’ll hold off going to the vet for right now. If she doesn’t respond to any of the other brands, I’ll make an appointment immediately. Thanks again! 🙂
