         Hello!

My baby bunnies will be five weeks old on Sunday and I want to go home to New Jersey, ( I live in Rhode Island), to visit family for ten days. My father has a large rabbit hutch for his rabbit at home, and he said he will take his rabbit to stay in the house while i’m there and my rabbit (the mother) and her five, five week old baby bunnies could stay in the hutch. The drive is four hours long, will this change of scenery and long ride be a shock and traumatizing to the bunnies? I appreciate any help! Thank you!

I would suggest not doing it. The mortality rate for buns that young is extremely high, and the stress of such a long car ride could be too much for them. I understand wanting to see your family, so is there a trusted friend that can aptly look after your rabbits while you are away?

I agree, that’s a long ride with young bunnies. They will also probably be stressed out in an outdoor hutch that is unfamiliar and smells like a strange rabbit. I second the recommendation to have someone look in on them once a day while you’re gone.

I think it would end badly. That level of stress could cause her to abandon nursing the kits, or worse.

Get a bunny sitter, and have the sitter come to visit a few times before you leave so mamma bunny can get to know him/her before the stress of you leaving.
