Anyone on this bd have experience with this. My bunny was not feeling well not eating much just kinda sitting very listless not jumping up to meet me in the am would not even eat his treats. Made app. to take him to bunny vet which was a little ride for me about 20 minutes or so someone said there is a vet close to you that does rabbits i cancelled the app with the bunny vet and called this other vet the person on the phone said we do a lot of rabbits, my mother had gone there once to bring baby possums she was not crazy about him i figured it was something simple. I go there BAD vibes about the place arabic sayings in every room i said to the vet you do a lot of rabbits he said a few i really got scared, stuck his finger in midnite’s mouth, took his temp i said you are hurting him gave him an oral does of amoxicillin said he ate something bad give him this twice a day for a wk. I look box said for dogs and cats get home research it see its DEADLY to bunnies i was in a panic. I knew someone at a rabbit shelter emailed her she emailed back quick, i swear God was watching over us, sometimes i don’t hear from her for days she said this is bad VERY BAD call the South Wilton Vet they are open until 11 pm i call them Dr Lamb rabbit vet calls back this is bad very bad i said could he died she said YES we need to get a pro biotic in him i have no idea where Wilton is mom & dad not home 9:30 pm i call my Aunt thank God she knew where wilton was 10:30 we are on our way to Wilton the vet waited for us we get there 11:30, fluids, pro biotic and 2 other meds. she said we will know in 3-5 if he will be ok. I said to most treat them right away she said no yours has a good shot. I call the vet the next day they insist this is what they do. Dr Lamb said tell them to call me. THANK GOD he was ok. Then he stopped eating totally would not eat at all he would just sit there awful diarrhea back to Dr. Lamb she said we have to treat his original problem, blood work, fecal exam another med she said its ok this will not kill him!!! The bloodwork came back the liver was off she said that was because he was not eating and he had a parasite gave him the meds that day that night he was eating! Within a day he was somewhat back to normal, eating no diarrhea its been a few wks totally normal eating a lot of hay just started giving him ltd veggies. I called the first vet they are still insisting what they gave him was normal and they said i should not have gone on the net. I was fuming screaming YOU COULD HAVE KILLED MY RABBIT they said no he could not have died why would Dr. Lamb say that needless to say i am suing that no good bastard. He should not be treating exotics. His ad said he is an expert. I am fuming. My poor rabbit had to wait another wk before he started feeling normal. How would we know what was wrong with him with no fecal, no bloodwork. Anyone have any experience with giving a rabbit amoxicillin. Sorry for the long post but i am SO MAD.Bunny is 7 middle aged she said for a 3 lb rabbit. Pretty healthy too.

Im sorry to hear of your ordeal.

Correct, amoxicillin and any other penicillins are dangerous to rabbits if given by mouth.

I would continue treatment with Dr Lamb since they are rabbit savvy and helped your rabbit survive.

This describes a treatment plan if dangerous antibiotic has been given: http://www.medirabbit.com/Unsafe_medication/Unsafe_treatment.htm

It’s sounds like Dr Lamb has taken some of these steps. Is your bunny still on the antibiotic Dr Lamb gave to counteract effects of the amoxicillin?

Regarding the other vet, perhaps there is a professional board you can report your case too?

**You’ve taken care not to name this vet in your post above. Just be sure not to do so in any further posts to stay within forum rules. **

I hope your rabbit continues to improve!

He was on it for about 5 days she took him off all meds after it seemed he was out of the woods. Thank God i found her and my aunt was able to drive me 1 hr away. I am still ticked. I called him giving him the chance to work this out but he is insisting he was right. There is a board of health you report Drs. too someone at work said like a dr. he is giving out medicine. Seems yrs ago he was reported for not properly treating a cat said he x rayed the cat never did but other cats x rays is in this cats file. The cat was taken to another vet after it was not getting better it was so bad they put it down quickly he mistreated the cat not proper treatement.

Oh so you cannot name a vet if its not properly treated your pet did not know that. Dr. Lamb was fantastic i want to get this place the word around if anyone has any problems with exotic animals and lives in Conn. fantastic service.

I’m sorry this happened to your bunny. The HRS has a list of questions to ask vets and thankfully I found that before going for a vet, my poor vet had to be grilled about what meds were OK for bunnies before I let him touch mine. When I finally went to the appointment for a checkup, I was identified by all the questions I had asked even though they didn’t know my name. It is hard since vets say they know how to treat an animal and they don’t, I don’t see why people don’t just admit “hey, I don’t know what I am doing, go somewhere else”.

Members are advised not to name them in public posts. The forum rule below explains why.

Negative Reviews/Comments of Pet Stores, Vet Hospitals, Individual Vets and other individuals: So, you saw horrible conditions at a pet store, your vet was terrible, and you had to deal with the rudest receptionist. Those things are monumentally frustrating! We understand, but for your own legal protection keep actual names of individuals and businesses out of your posts. According to the Communications Decency Act, you, the individual poster in an online forum, is legally responsible for your statements, and so if a company or individual wants to pursue a lawsuit against you, they can track you down (IF a court orders it) by your IP address (even if it changes).

You mentioned earlier Dr Lamb said to get the other vet to call them? Maybe this other vet will listen to another professional. You’d hope!

So how is your rabbit now then? He has fully recovered?

Well he said he was a bunny vet then when i got there he said he did a few. I brought him to a great vet when i got him an exotic vet she was great but you have to wait wks for an app. I was very lucky this vet was on duty that night and very late too. Very lucky.

My regular vet will not treat him she will cut his nails that is it.
