This is a question for all the members who use chlorhexidine for cleaning their buns.

What is your process for using it? Put it on dry fur, or put a little in water for a wet butt bath? If wet, how much?

Is it safe around their genitals?

If it air dries or is wiped out of fur with a paper towel, is it safe for the rabbit to then groom that area? I saw one person on another group say they wipe it into the fur without a butt bath, but I’m a little nervous about putting it in and not rinsing it out.

I bought a gallon of 2% concentration and plan to make a 0.2% concentration for use.

My vet suggests to dilute it (I usually do about 1 part to 5 parts water), soap up the area, and then rinse very thoroughly. I would not want them getting any reside in their mouths. Not sure about genitals. I would avoid that area.

I’ve used this for sore hocks and other healing wounds as suggested by my vet.

What are you using it for? Just for a dirty bum? If that is the case, I would just use natural soap as suggested in this article:

I used to give water butt baths for dirty bum (she would lie in her cecals and they would really cake on) but have since trimmed the side she lays on and they don’t stick as bad. Now I am more concerned about urine in her fur. She is on sherpa fleece that is supposed to wick urine away to the puppy pee pad below, but sometimes it doesn’t wick very quickly since she pees sideways and not down (she lies on her side), and also sometimes she pees against the rolled up towels I have around her area as bumpers, which she continues to lie against until I move her.

I know others on here have said it is very soothing on their rabbit’s skin, so I’m hoping if she is getting any discomfort (she is never soaked, just sometimes damp) that the chlorhexidine will help. At least one person on here used a shampoo with chlorhexidine so I feel like it should be safe around the genitals as long as it’s properly diluted, but I sure would feel better if someone could confirm.

Anybody else want to weigh in? =)

I have a 3 yr old male bun that is losing fur and has dandruff. I was wondering if chlorhexidine would be safe to use in case he has folliculitis fungal or bacterial? I have been to the vet and there are no mites etc.
