Hello there! My girlfriend and I have 2 black French Lop bunnies, Audrey and Pigeon, approx. 4 months old. We bought them from a local pet store when (we were told) they were about 12 weeks old. At the time, we were told they were female, and in fact that all the bunnies they had in were female, but since then we’ve had some doubts about Audrey.

Pigeon has always been the larger of the two bunnies, so we don’t think she’s neccessarily pregnant, but Audrey’s at the age to be going through puberty and has been humping aaaall over the place, including Pigeon, whereas Pigeon’s showed no behaviour like that at all. We’ve tried to sex them by diagrams online, but have found it almost impossible – sometimes they look male, sometimes female, so we’re at a bit of a loss.

They’re getting on just fine and we’ve had no other problems or worries with them at all, and the few times Audrey’s humped Pigeon, Pigeon’s jumped off and then Audrey’s left her alone. Is there anyway that from this anyone could help us sex them? Could we perhaps take them to a local vet specialising in rabbits who could tell us, and does anyone know if they would charge us for this? We used to have rats that we bought from the same store, and they wrongly sexed them when we bought them, although when we bought the “girls” the woman sexing them seemed pretty sure they were ladies.

Just a bit worried we could have lots of baby bunnies that we’re not sure how to look after (and we’re moving house shortly) or other problems; besides being super angry at the pet shop – grr!

Pet stores often get it wrong. Going to a vet is a good idea, it’s generally a good idea to get a baseline health exam anyway when you get a new pet, and they can tell you then what the genders are. The sooner the better, by the sounds of it!

I’d seperate them until you can get them to a vet.

Thank you! Well we had a health check with the in-store vet who said all was fine, I can’t remember if he double-checked the sex at all but he didn’t correct it. Do you know if it’s standard practice for vets to charge to sex a rabbit for you? Funds are just tight at the moment and obviously I wasn’t thinking I’d have to get them sexed again :/.

Also, is their behaviour to one another an indicator? They haven’t fought at all, they often clean each other and right now they’re curled up together.

I had mine checked by a vet AND sexed them myself and the breeder and Buttons was acting very… male with marking and grunting, circling ect so I got some advice to seperate them and did so. Turns out Buttons is a boy just a late bloomer so it’s always best to seperate. Oops litters are very stressful on the mum and her owner so I’d defiantly recommend separating them for the time being

If Audrey is a male, testicles may become visible within the next month, or they may be visible now. When “she” humps, if you take her off mid-hump, you might be able to see a penis if she is a he.

Other than that, both sexes can hump to show dominance, so humping alone does not prove sex.

Keep them separated until you know for sure. Also, if your ultimate goal is to have them live together in the future, they will both need to be spayed and/or neutered, especially if they are both female.

Thanks everyone! Will be calling a vet tomorrow to see what they can do to help. They haven’t been marking or grunting at all, they did circle each other for a little while yesterday but that was it. The humping was only a little the other day and nothing else seems an issue, but I’ll see if the vet can help. Why oh why must rabbits genitalia look so darn similar – maybe they’re trying to trick us all out. Either way we’d be looking to get them spade/neutered in a few months, probably October time.

You’ve gotten some great advice and I’m glad you’re seeing a vet. Just wanted to re-iterate that they should be separated until you know for sure.
