Hi everyone! I’ve been away for a little while because I’m moving at the end of the summer! I’m very excited! I’ve been very busy planning and looking for apartments for Lu and I. Anyways, I thought I would pop in for a second with a question and hopefully I’m back for good again!

I did a little research, but everything I was finding was about unaltered male rabbit running circles around their owners feet and it being a sexual or aggressive behavior. Well Lucy has been running circles around my feet like crazy lately! Anytime I get up she tries to run around my feet (even if I’m walking, sometime I accidentally kick her!). For anyone who doesn’t know, Lucy is a 7 month old spayed female rabbit. What does this mean? Why is she doing this all the time?

          Maybe she’s dancing with you?

“Rabbits have several ways to indicate playfulness, and there are lots of things most rabbits like to do as play. Rabbits like dancing in pairs and solo (more about the latter later). You may receive an invitation to pair dance, as evidenced by your rabbit running in circles around you. This means the rabbit is basically crazy about you, and terribly happy to see you, and is a very common enthusiastic greeting. A polite response is to wait patiently for a circle or three, and then do some dancing yourself, with a little spinning, walking back and forth in front of the rabbit, or circling around it. As described later, a few hops or head-flicks are also acceptable. Note that some rabbits don’t like being circled by a graceless hulk, and will get nervous, in which case you should probably just accept the dance as a gift. Dances should be concluded by offering a little grooming to your partner.”

Chester does that too He dances around me, then stops and waits to see what I do. I do a couple of spins and he dances again. This can go over for a couple of minutes and just ends up when he is too tired and flops next to my feet!

If you notice as well rabbits do not run/hop in straight lines either – so if she’s running under your feet it’s because she’s not exactly running straight anyway – I don’t know exactly why rabbits do this but I think it’s more of an instinct type behavior – it’s harder for prey to catch them if they run side to side and thereby they are running under our feet.

One of my buns, Baxter loves running circles around us a few times per day. If he doesn’t do it….we worry he’s not feeling well. But we usually stand there for a few circles, then step towards him a few times….and he jumps and binkies.

Lucy will do crazy eights if I stand with my feet far enough apart. I was just making sure it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary! Oh bunnies and the strange things they do.
