Bright Eyes was sitting in his cage (in his litter pan, the silly buggar) and I was stroking him behind the ears to try and get him comfortable in his cage, since I imagine moving in with me to a whole new place with a whole new family must be stressful… He usually seems ok with me stroking him behind the ears but suddenly, for the first time his mouth was making this strange sound! It sounded like he was grinding his teeth or something! It’s not very loud and the only reason I could hear it was because of the echo in the room where he sleeps and there weren’t any other noises…I’m a little concerned about this, is he doing it because he’s scared or angry? Am I hurting him or something?

Noo this is called “tooth purring”
It’s a sign of comfort, they do so when you stroke them just in the right place, usually behind ears or on cheeks or other places (differs with rabbits) so actually learn his favorite places and keep petting him!

P.S: It’s good that you can hear it well, I hold my rabbit’s skull so I can feel when he grinds because I can never hear it LOL

Oh, thank god… Yeah it did kind of sound like a purr now that I think of it.. I’m so glad xD
Yeah he likes behind his ears and his cheek… I guess that means he’s ok with me

What position was his body in?

If he was flopped out or in a c comfortable position then I would guess tooth purring. If he was hunched up it could be tooth grinding which indicates pain.

He was in his sleeping position… He seemed pretty relaxed and I went to check now and he’s asleep.. He likes to sleep in his litter pan so he wasn’t flopped out but he wasn’t hunched and I looked it up and the noise sounded more like a soft purr than a chattering so I think he was just happy.

Yup, tooth purring. It’s so sweet when they do it.

In case you are not away, another tooth sound they can make is a very loud, chattery grinding which can indicate pain. This is much louder and more aggressive than tooth purring so you will know the difference if you ever hear it.
