Seriously…. the Oxbow feed bags don’t seal.  Anybody else have this problem Their zipper is terrible and never closes.  I have had to resort putting Winston’s food in a gallon ziplock.

        Am I alone in this?

Before I moved Winston to Oxbow Adult he was eating Purina Fibre 3, an alfalfa based pellet.  That bag costs less and houses 2 lbs more food… I am finishing our last bag and the zipper STILL works perfectly fine and it is easy to use.

Oxbow feeders: what do you do to keep your bag fresh?

I just use the ziplock bag it comes in. Never had an issue with it. If you open them roughly you can break the zipper… but beyond that they close fine for me. If you are having issues with it though, they have cheap plastic containers for cereal and stuff at any store (wal-mart has them for under $5) that you can store it in.

I agree – I always dump mine out into a pet food container – it’s actually for bird seed and I take the top off to scoop out what I need. So much easier this way too.

Who knows, maybe I am a rough opener, LOL. I just never had any issues with the bags of Fibre 3. This could just just be a fluke bag or lot of bags.

I agree, I need to get a seperate container to keep the food in. That would make my life easier.

Agreed. I fold the bag down and wrap it with a rubber band. I fill up a tupperware container to give them their meals out of since the bag is such a pain.

I never have problems with the Oxbow bags. They open and seal just fine for me. Like Sticker said though, you could break the zipper if you open the bag roughly. Or if you’re like my husband, pull on the side of the bag and one side of the zipper and rip the zipper from the side of the bag. o_O

I don’t use Oxbo so can’t comment on the bags, but I do have some really terrific food bins. I got the first one for my dog food (a fourty pound bag is such a pain to store) and I was thrilled with it. That is what it is made for, it is plastic, has a tightly fitting lid, and wheels on the bottom. They are actually marked with how many pounds of food each can hold. The entire lid flips up so scooping out is really easy. My rabbit pellets now live in the ten pound bin. I got them at a hardware store, and was very amused to find when I went to pick up my rabbits that the SPCA were using “my” bins. The lids snap too which is a bonus since one of my cats has been known to dig into either dog food or rabbit pellet bags and create a multi species buffet, … the last one (why I got the first bin) was pretty expensive.

I am terrible with any zip lock type seal. Even zip lock bags! I can never seal them without really concentrating!
I just fold the bag and put a chip clip to keep it closed I really want to get a container though, but that’ll have to do for now.

I use a plastic Sterilite container. The lid is airtight. A 10-lb bag fills it perfectly, with just enough space left for a measuring cup.

I’m really bad at the bags that are supposed to have built-in ziplocs. I always either cut too close and ruin in, or too far away and the bag is hard to get open. A perfect example of this are the bags of shredded cheese from the grocery store… lol!

I prefer pouring pellets into my own container. Besides, my 9yo is responsible (usually) for the evening feeding, so it has to be an easy enough container so I know the lid is going to be tight enough after.

I use a plastic container just as Beka27 does so I don’t get this problem 😮 I feel like it stores a lot nicer as well. I actually just keep it on top of my shelf right next to her cage for dinner time And it’s very easy to get the measuring cup in & out of the container, works great!

I did the same with my bird’s food by putting it in a container. I don’t like to deal with a whole lot of bags

I keep mine in a rubbermaid container.

I put my bags of Oxbow inside a popcorn tin – those decorative metal containers that usually hold 3 different flavors of popcorn. They’re a good size for the bags of pellets.
