Every morning I make a fruit smoothie for breakfast, and I always wind down at night with a cup of camomile tea in bed. As delicious as they are, I’m not the only one who thinks so

Without a doubt, as soon as I sit down with my smoothie, Jasper and Getty will jump up on me and beg for a lick! I’m lenient with them and tip my glass slightly so that they can have a couple of sips (they’re always some variety of raspberry/mint/blueberry/banana so I know they’re safe for bunnies) and it makes them very happy. With Jasper and Getty I always give them their daily greens when I have my smoothie, they eat those first and THEN come up for some smoothie. Like a dessert, I guess! At night when I’m in bed, Tribbles will often jump up on my pillow and steal the teabag and run to the bottom of the bed with it, just to lick it! Even when I try and hide my cup behind a book  he’ll stand up and pull the book down to see what I’m hiding

I just wondered if I should be being so lenient with sharing with them, and if anyone else shares with their buns like this? I find it adorable and I don’t offer the brothers any more fruit throughout the day. On the tea front, do you think it would be okay to brew up some cold camomile/nettle tea and offer a little bit to Tribbles? Even though he seems more interested in the teabag rather than the tea.

Also, sorry if this should be in the general discussion area, I wasn’t soo sure of where to post this.

I’ve read that if a bunny won’t eat after surgery etc you can mix pellets with camomille tea to a paste and feed it to the bunny. My bunny eats fresh camomille.

As for the smoothies, it sounds extremely cute. If it’s healthy or not would probably depend on the amount.

Chamomile and nettle are both safe for rabbits, … although I’d guess they’d probably like the dried plant (or as you’ve seen the tea bag) more then actual tea. By all means offer some tea but I think a trip to a bulk or health food store and a spoonful of dried herbs would probably be better received.

About your morning drink, may I ask what else goes into it aside from the fruit? Neither dairy nor sweeteners (whether sugar or artificial) are good for rabbits, and some of the other things that are often added to smoothies (yeast, protein, wheigh, etc.) are likely to be too good for them. But that really depends on your recipe, it might be just fine.

I don’t add any sugar, sweeteners or dairy, it’s just a pure fruit smoothie. This morning I gave them a bottlecap each and they seemed to be content with that, and the bottlecaps to play with after. As for the chamomile tea I think I’ll just grow my own chamomile now rather than offering it as tea.

I’ve also noticed with the smoothies, Getty will never eat grapes any other way but blended. The other three eat them right up whole, but even if I cut one into rings or chunks, Getty just won’t touch it unless it’s in a smoothie!

I think it’s okay as long as you give a very minimal amount. Remember that treats should only make up a tiny part of your buns diet. Rabbit.org recommends fruit daily ration no more than 1 oz. to 2 oz. per 6 lbs. body weight.

Olivia likes the smell of my chamomile tea too.

It sounds cute, and I love my little rituals with Sammy, too.
Your smoothie doesn’t contain any harmful ingredients. The thing that made me stop and think about them was the frozen aspect of it. My vets have cautioned me on occasion to not give my bunny freezing or even refrigerated water – just cool tap water or room temp. – because the cold is a bit hard on their tummies. So a taste or two is fine since they obviously like it, but I wouldn’t go so far as to have them drink it like liquid.

Glad to hear chamomile is OK from the others. How about the tea bag itself? Getting eaten at all? Licking is probably like taking a sedative before bed.
