Yeah, I finally got pictures and even got them resized!  Now if I can just load them properly.  This first should be of Sam taking off out of the pen into the living room in his wheels:

The next one should be showing him pushing off from behind (excuse the sore on his bottom, we are treating that).  As you can see, his hips and  body are still a little twisted from spending most of the day lying on the same side.

The next is him flicking his heels as if to say, “Hasta la Vista, Baby!”

And then him and Max gorging at the food dish together:

Then just a picture of the cart (I wasn’t being careful and didn’t have both stems stuck in; also, I had tried to removed the lower bar myself and not succeeded which is why it looks kind of broken).  That is followed by a picture of the wheels, the two individual wheels replacing the two wheels connected by the bar:

Well, that got a little confusing. Sorry there were all those cart pictures at the beginning . . . . I hope you have the patience to scroll past them and see Sam in action with Max.

The cart was originally developed with a dog in mind, and of course bunnies have an entirely difrerent range of motion in their lower spine and legs when they hop so I have an idea for his next level of rehab cart that I am going to talk to Laurie at DogstoGo to see if she can do it for me — basically putting a sling on a stable frame with back wheels. The sling would free him up to use that full rotation of his hips, I’m thinking.

It’s so good to see the pictures now and better understand some of the design changes youve been working on. I can see now where the cross bar would have hindered him being able to get his legs right under himself before.
I think I have seen something like the sling set up you are considering. Is it like an A-frame over the body that supports the sling?

His hind end looks really good considering his issues. You take great care of him.

Thanks, Jerseygirl. I must say, when all this got started I was a bit pressured and stressed and wondered how I was going to get control of his poor continually wet bottom, but between the cart and his gaining strength it’s become a lot easier. And he is just so receptive of the care.

Last night I actually cut about an inch off the height of his wheels– I had set them originally according to the flexibility in his feet and knees but that left his butt pretty high and without any option of flexing. He wasn’t very happy about the reduction in height because it challenges him to do more for himself in giving him the room and opportunity to bend his lower back. . . .Thanks for your encouragement.

That looks great! I am reminded of my bunny, Spockie, who lost use of one of his back legs (the other only pushed him along) during his last year. He taught himself to scoot along the carpet. I had checked out carts online but at the time there wasn’t really much for a bunny of 6 lbs.

May I make one suggestion? Spockie was incontinent once he couldn’t lift himself into his litter pan. I bought these carpet pieces online from Palace Pet Beds, which were designed for puppies or senior dogs. It would be instead of using diapers and puppy pads. They are machine washable, can be cut to size, go in the dryer, so you can just lay them down and change them out for another piece as needed. They wick away moisture so didn’t have Spockie getting any rashes.

Your bunnies are lucky to have such a loving slave.

Thanks for the tip. Poor dear Spockie! These guys really have heart, don’t they?

Thanks for the suggestion on inconitnence bedding!

They do. I am constantly amazed with the stories of bunnies who become disabled or were born that way. What’s amazing is that they all seem to remain cheerful, and devise ways to get what they want or where they want to go. They can be so clever sometimes. And if you help them, they just get very affectionate and relish the attention. Spockie amazed me with the speed he built up to. It was like he’d say, “well, if you’re going to sit in the next room, then I’m coming too!” and he’d appear around the corner, scoot, scoot scooting along.

Thanks for posting pictures of the cart! I hope it helps your bunny. For such little creatures with fragile bodies they sure have strong spirits!

Oh, Sam loves that cart, let me tell you. It lets him get stronger and more confident again. He is like a Mack truck barreling around the living room in it. I actually am having a second one made with a double set of wheels for him to give him more stability because he does tip over sometimes. The manufacturer suggested this, it’s something they have done in the past. So then he really will be like a Mack truck!!!!!
