We recently acquired two flemish giants that we plan on letting have the run of a room…in time.   Their current set up is a large plastic dog crate with a plastic cat litter container with hay within reach.  Their food/water dishes are in the cage but out of the litter box.  Their is a towel to lay on in front of the dishes.  They have an x pen that they have supervised time in until they are 100% trustworthy.  They had one accident in the cage/out of litter box which I cleaned up with a paper towel and put in the litter box.  There haven’t been any more pee accidents .  However, they keep sleeping in their litter box.  They also poo on their towel while they eat their pellets.  Is this typical?  I have never attempted litter training and wasn’t sure if the expectation is all pellets in the litter box too.  They really don’t poo outside the cage at all  … so that’s something.  Thoughts?

Some rabbits like to lay in the litter box. Don’t know why.

          Eating poop is normal too

LOL..sorry..food pellets. I guess I shouldn’t refer to it all as pellets. They poo as they eat their food pellets. I’m sure their eating poo too..I just haven’t been privy to that yet.

I have a big litter tray for each bun with hay in the corner of the tray they don’t pee in! This made them use it more and eat more hay! I also brought them a bed so they lead on that instead and that worked well although they still sometimes sit in their tray for a while. Hope this helps

Oh ok! Yeah rabbits are known for eating and pooping at the same time which is why we put the hay in the litter box

Well..hubby came home with boxes from work and we fashioned one into a nesting box of sorts. They took to it instantly! No more lounging in the litter

I read somewhere that Bunnies like sand so i guess he thinks the litter is like sand. well after i cleaned my bunny’s litter he likes to lay and roll in it…
i have also put the hay in his litter as he poop while eating his hay. no problems with the food pellet thought but i am giving him outside his cage most of the time in order to bond with my baby bunny
