        Hey all –

So I’ve recently discovered that studies were done and that Hydrogen Peroxide does NOT kill bacteria and is pretty much useless when cleaning cuts and wounds.  With this discovery, I went on a mission to find what DOES work for rabbits.

Apparently the best thing for treating wounds and cuts in rabbits is Dilute povidone iodine (Betadine).  It kills bacteria in the wound and is safe to use.  Just thought I would send out the message to others who have kept Peroxide in their First Aid Kits.

I would second Tan Lovers comments in the strongest possible terms. Peroxide is actually known to damage healthy tissue when it is poured onto an open wound. My friend (a professional nurse) told me that it won’t be used in hospitals to clean wounds. It has uses but that is definitely one way in which it should be avoided.

I’ve always used peroxide to rinse my mouth after brushing… so it doesn’t help with bacteria at all? I have always heard about it eating away at the good tissue as well but i thought it cleaned bacteria too… thank you for this information!

It does kill some bacteria, and is recommended for sanitation by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to kill salmonella, e. coli and other food borne bacteria. It also kills mold, so is good for cleanup after water damage and such to your house

For mouth rinsing, its recommended to use only after an infection, as it will damage the enamel of your teeth if used too often.

Keep in mind as well, that you should only use the 3% solution, as the higher concentration ones can be harmful if used incorrectly.

BUT yes, it does damage healthy cells and is no longer recommended to clean wounds. Warm water and soap is better, but if you don’t have access to such, like in a serious emergency, peroxide will clean it, but at a risk to the healthy tissue.

Oh thank you for this information! I don’t do it often, but with this information I will decrease it ten folds! I always enjoyed doing it if I have had a lot of sugary foods that day because it makes my teeth feel funny even after brushing and the peroxide always made my feel…really, really clean lol

I just did a bunch of reading on horse vet kits and found that the consensus is that there are lots of products that do better, and peroxide is pretty much just ok for using to get blood out of fur…yikes!

Good to know all this info on peroxide. I wasnt aware about it effecting healthy tissue. Also didnt know it could be used for mold.

Most readily available solutions are the 3%. So is it right to assume the 6% solution is equally less effective as broad spectrum antibacterial?

Thanks for the correction on the bacteria, MB. I had read it through an article of Dana Krempels… and didn’t realize it could also be used to kill food type bacterias! I was more looking towards wounds and cuts. But it’s always good to know it does have a use!

When I was doing research for the Rabbit First-Aid Kit on my blog – I had put the peroxide on it until my BF stumbled upon an article about peroxide indicating it’s not good to use for cuts and wounds. Which prompted me to look into it’s use on rabbits. And Dana Krempels articles popped up!

Hydrogen Peroxide definitely has it’s uses – it makes sense to me from what MB says about killing food borne bacteria since you would use it to rinse your mouth. Also cancer patients are told to rinse (their mouths) with a hydrogen peroxide formula after chemo treatment so it’s definitely good for something.

I believe it is somehow mixed with another chemical as well to give platinum blondes their platinum hair :~) – what could be more useful than that!
