         Hey guys,

So I just ran out of the bale of hay that I’ve had for Buster for quite a while. The person I got it from before is no longer around here, so I need to find somebody else. I spoke to a farmer around here, and he said he’d give me a free bale, BUT he only has ‘grass hay’ that has alfalfa in it. He said all of the farmers around here have about 20% alfalfa hay mixed in to their bales.

Do you think this would be okay for Buster? He’s 4 and I don’t want him to be eating too much, but it’s not like he would be eating ALL alfalfa hay. I just can’t stand paying $15 for a bag of hay that only lasts me like 2 weeks.

Not too sure what else to do!

        Thanks

If hay is 80-90% of a bunny’s diet and 20% of that is alfalfa hay that would make about 16-18% of Buster’s overall diet alfalfa hay. I’m not sure how much alfalfa is considered “too much”. You might be able to give your vet a ring and ask if there are any risks/issues with feeding an adult grass hays mixes with 20% alfalfa hay. Hopefully someone else here will know more!

Do you have any feed or horse/farm supply stores in your area? Even if they don’t sell hay they might have flyers up or know suppliers in the area. I also found this:

Oh for sure! Alfalfa isn’t bad in small amounts-it’s just higher in calories and calcium than other hays typically. A mix is just fine. I wouldn’t even worry about a 50/50 mix if yours don’t have any ongoing issues (high weight, diabetes, stones etc)
Just make sure that the hay is for horses and not cows or other animals. Horses need a higher quality hay than other animals so horse hay is good for rabbits, but cow hay would not be.
