Helloworld!!
These are great! Got’ em. They will be going in the gallery soon.
Keep ’em comin’. This will help us to continue to educate new bunny slaves about the right sized spaces needed instead of the little store bought cages. Plus it will give all of us creative ideas and options to help figure out what would work best for our living situation, yet still offer the necessary space for our bunnies.
Helloworld!!
I am going to be redoing my rabbit area since they are going away for bonding in a couple days so once that is done I will post pictures. I am also going to be cleaning out the “rabbit run” (outside play area) so I can post pictures of that as well. =)
I just recently added the condo to the cage this week. This is the setup for my three bunnies.
Here is Nigel’s space, he doesn’t walk on our hardwood floors so I can keep him contained with the rugs. The main area is about 10″x12″ and the runners you see on the bottom left are about 12″x4″. The runners lead up to our living room so in the evening I move the rugs around so he can come visit while we watch tv. Oh and this picture is a little old I’ve since added a large printer box filled with a shredded phone book and the ramp runs between the two.
Well, mine is not fancy in terms of how crafty we got with building. Ours is an outdoor hutch that we use indoors – if you don’t want to include it, then don’t. I know that “hutch” rubs people the wrong way, so that’s why I’m always referring to it as his “house.” Regardless, it’s a very good size, and since it’s NOT being used outdoors, there’s nothing wrong with it. That being said, I’ll just go ahead and post pictures.
This was right after we completely finished assembling it, putting everything in it, and finally released him to go explore it.
Sorry for the darker image, it was night. This is an idea of how it looks to be inside on the bottom floor. You can see his hidey home, pet bed (no longer in there because he did not approve of it), and the ramp leading to the second floor.
Everything related to poop, pee, and food or water is all on the second floor because the plastic bottom is a MILLION times easier to clean than any messes that get on carpet or fabric. We kept it all in the front part of the top floor so that if he’s munching, pooping, or eating, he can see us and we can see him. The back room is more private and closed off, so we didn’t want him to have to go back there whenever he wanted to graze.
This gives you a decent idea of the top floor. You can see Java’s loving his new home. Lounging with his water bottle. And you can see the mess he had already made in the back.
Now this was rather expensive, but my grandma really took a liking to Java and wanted to get him a “nicer home.” Nothing was really wrong with his original x-pen, but she insisted on letting her treat him. Either way, we all agree that this is an awesome house for him. However, like I said, it was pretty pricey, and for 1/4 of the price you could easily build something just as nice from NIC cubes. Oh well, spoiled bunny!
Thanks Eucalyptus! I think it’s a great indoor option! It looks nice. Just because it may have been made to go outside, doesn’t mean something like this can’t be brought indoors. I actually think it looks crafty, even if it just came that way.
I will definitely be adding it to the habitat gallery. Thanks for posting it.
Thanks BB! I’m glad that all my rambling and photos at least made a contribution. I do think it’s nice looking – it blends in with furniture a bit more than NIC cubes which is a plus (not that I dislike NIC). And I do enjoy how much it looks like a little house – we always say “Java’s going home now!” when he goes back in to use the box or lounge after playtime. Quite adorable.
Glad that you’re adding it!
Here’s my contribution, it’s outdoors but just meant for nice summer-days, not permanent outdoor-housing, but originally the hutch part was used for out-door housing, before I bought it and repainted it and added the run. The run has welded netting all around, in the bottom as well although it doesn’t show on the pic, so no predators can get in and the rabbit can’t get out. It’s big enough to sit and lie in for a human who wants to spend time with her rabbit. A section of the roof can be lifted off to make it easier to clean the hutch.
Indoors I don’t have a habitat other than various hidey-boxes and a sofa-table with a shelf underneath where my bun spends most of his time, he’s free-roam.
Heres Lady and Sams night time digs
They free roam from about 7am-10pm-ish.
Wow — bam, that’s a nice outdoor play area.
Sam & Lady’s Human — that is really neat! I love how you made it so it fits in the corner. So does the front open up like a door – can’t tell if there are hinges inside. Doesn’t matter, either way, it’s great, just curious.
Helloworld!!
ooops yup! We took apart the small wire cage I bought for Sam before I knew better, and screwed it into the frame. The whole thing can open inward on a hinge, the bottom half can open like you see, or I can leave the bottom half closed and open the little door for them to go in and out
I took some photos with my new SLR, but I’m having issues figuring out how to get them to upload to the site. They are too big. This is the most recent photo of Ashe’s new condo with all the kinks worked out.

You can resize photo’s in “paint” on PC’s. Just click the resize and click pixels and adjust it to the size allowed on BB. =)
It’s something to do with my pixels. My bf knows how to fix it. He’s just in NY right now, so I figured out how to do it using the URL on that pictures thread. Thanks for the help though!
No problem. =)
Well, I’m not sure if my “hutch” will meet standards, but I feel it’s a good option “for now.”
I only got Hazel about a month ago and have been studying hard to be the best bunny mom I can be. So far, I have found this website to be invaluable!! Rabbits.org also helped and I have purchased 99% of the recommended readings from both websites.
In the meantime, Hazel made do with inherited habitats from my guinea pig, Clyde, who passed away in July. Her first cage was your typical “my first cage” deal and would have been way to small for the long run, but was perfect for isolating her in my bathroom for safety while I slowly introduced the predators in my household to this new little moving meal. They are all doing great now, but I need to have a very stout habitat to keep her safe when I am not home to supervise.
I purchased an xpen right away so she could have some free time without me worrying about her getting stuck in some nook & cranny during her first weeks home (she was soooo small that I had to tie cardboard inside the xpen to keep her from going through the slats! She looked very pleased the first two times she escaped – showing off her cleverness, much to my frustration!) However, as mentioned, she could not be free and unsupervised in the xpen all the time, and as she outgrew the “starter” cage, I pulled the former big guinea pig hutch out of the barn and got it ready for her in my loft.
Pros: It’s sturdy, a nice height, and I know my cats & dogs can’t break into it, it has a solid floor, has good ventilation and is easy to clean. The bottom is actually a rabbit pan meant for under a wire floor to catch droppings. Because it was wasn’t totally smooth and I didn’t want to put bedding throughout the bottom of it (messy & costly!) I chose to take a piece of pegboard from the barn and hot glue some old “all purpose” floor mats from a dollar store. I bought 6 mats total, using 3 mats a piece and made two floors. If one becomes too soiled, I can pull it out, vacuum it, scrub with white vinegar and put a fresh one in. I was worried at first she would chew the carpet, but that didn’t happen. I ordered some sea grass mats to put over it, perhaps they will even arrive today (from the Binky Bunny store, of course!!!) I made these floors for just $3 a piece since the wood was scrap. Also, I’d like to add that there are no exposed sharp “ends” of the chicken wire inside the cage – it was stapled outside so there isn’t anything to impale themselves on.
Cons: It’s going to be a little on the small side as a full time condo (2.5ft x 3ft) and I don’t like when she stands up and puts her paws on the chicken wire on the sides, it just looks uncomfortable. I put my face down low for kisses so she doesn’t have to do that. I wish it had multiple levels. I am actually kind of interested in saving my money to purchase an outdoor hutch like the one Eucalpytus shared because it’s very sturdy and would protect her from the cats and dogs also. (don’t get me wrong, my dogs and cats are lovely creatures and haven’t shown even ONE SIGN of harming my bunny, but I don’t want to set them up to fail by having an inadequate pen if their instincts get tested).
So I will share it here and perhaps maybe some helpful criticism may occur – I wonder if I could remove the chicken wire and replace with smoother square or even add another level… or I can just scrap it and build anew – that’s always fun also! I am also brainstorming on turning a dormer closet into a bunny room – it has 8ft x 8ft floor space and a sturdy door that I could replace with a wire door for ventilation. However, this is still a work in progress as I would need to do a lot of bunny proofing before that can happen. (In fact, in the top photo, you can see a part of the dormer closet door that I would like to turn into a wire door with a sturdy latch and viola! Instant bunny room in my own room. I thought of this idea because my cat Capone keeps his litterbox in another of the dormer closets and that works out very well for him – we just cut a small door in the bottom and in and out he can go.
Hi, I don’t know if you got my pics already there, but here they are with a whole view of the bed as well:
Nellie! that is totally awesome!!!!
BonnieSue- Wow — that’s really neat! So how do you get her out? Maybe a ramp (with sides since it would be kind of steep) could be built so she could come down on her own if there isn’t a way for her to come and go into her xpen below)
Nelli – Also very creative! And thank you for including the wider photo. I think I hadn’t posted the photos because I needed an “establishing shot” so the others made sense.
We are adding these to the habitat section today! Thanks everyone. And if you still have some great habitats to share, keep ’em com’n!
BB – The entire top comes off, so I can lift her in and out (another con with all the lifting… and another con is that if I leave the roof off, my cat will climb in and then Hazel gets mad and poops outside her litterbox! This happened in the xpen because he used to sleep in there at night). She likes to sit on top of that fabric cube though, and waits for me to get her out. I can always tell when she wants to come out and when she doesn’t – she usually hops over to me when she wants attention and it’s also a nice height to just reach in and pat her. The roof was another thing I had to bunny proof on her habitat: I never worried about the guinea pig standing up to knock the roof loose with this head, but she would be able to do that as she gets bigger or when she climbs on her houses. It doesn’t show in the one photo because I hadn’t rigged it up yet, but she has bungee cords at either end that help hold the roof down. You can see a glimpse of one of the bungee cords in the second picture because I took that one later.
One of these days I’ll have it all the way I want it, but luckily she’s just a little baby yet and I have time to get it all just the way Hazel will like it.
All of these rabbitats are gorgeous!
I have a very small house with limited space, so I can’t make an NIC cage, due to this I have to use a store bought cage with a shelf. And due to that I let my buns (when they’re alive) free roam whenever im home for at least 4 hours a day minimum.
I’m getting a new bun this weekend, he’ll be my first boy! I’m so excited, and all of these houses make me so anxious to bring him home.
My awesome and loving carpenter husband just finished building this beautiful cage for me and the boys (Baxter and Boo). The buns are free range – but the cage will house their food and litter box. I also thought it might make it easier to house the boys at a bunny sitter’s home when we travel.
We used NIC Cubes grids on the lower level….and used single XPen grids for the top two levels.
The grids were secured to the wood frame with Insulated Staples. http://www.homedepot.com/p/5-8-in-W…Ze9xrWG1hI
We had a difficult time finding a good hinge for the doors – and ended up using Cable Nail Clips - which worked out great! http://www.homedepot.com/p/GE-1-in-…Ze9-7WG1hI
Rear View, Front View with doors open and Front with doors closed:
I just wanted to add photos of the two types of setup I am using right now. A NIC cage with attached pen and a NIC pen.
I just finished setting this up for Kerra at school in the library. Except she isnt really sideways… still learning to take pics with my ipad. Trying to think of something for the lake house I need something small with very easy clean up.
Here’s what I’ve spent two days building for my bunny. X
I had to redo the rabbit condo because it turns out Rascal is too afraid of Marley to bond with. I think Rascal is content with just having Valentine around. We are going to be adopting another rabbit for Marley. I have to build another condo for Marley and his friend but here is Rascal and Valentine’s condo.
