My bunny refuses to let me clip his nails. I’ve tried wrapping him and it just doesn’t work. I end up getting scratched all over!

Is there any way I can have him file his own nails? Maybe using a brick or something like that? Any tips would be greatly appreciated

For many rabbits, nail clipping is a simple two person job. Have one hold the bun forward to you from under his armpits, supporting his bottom, then you, with the clipper, readily get each nail . . . . I have also found that PetsMart will often do it for far less than vet and that other pet groomers will too.

One way of keeping them down is to have plaster board on the floor of the cage. It helps wear them down.

No. you can put stuff in the cage to help but in the end, you will still need to end up needing to clip the nails for your bun.

FlemishMom, is this all Petsmarts clipping the nails for buns? Or does it just depend on the groomers comfort at clipping a rabbit’s nails?

I think it depends on the groomers comfort and familiarity with buns. But you;d be surprised how many groomers do have experience with buns and don’s mind doing it for $5-$10. I’d just ask at PetsMart first and then call a few of your local groomers. But of course, the easiest way is just with a friend helping you, holding the bunny like I described. . . It does work well.

Flemishmom, you’re lucky! The petsmart’s around me won’t deal with bunnies.
I take mine to the vet because I have the same problem… I have had horrible neck scratches previously as well.
It costs me $17 at my small-town vet office, and in the city where I went to school it was $28. It gets pricey, but I find it worth it… I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I hurt him. What they suggest is doing the bunny burrito with two people. I’ve just always been too scared to try!

Just a side note: I think confidence is a HUGE thing with rabbits. They’re so used to sensing things around them that I think they can really sense when you’re nervous… I know if I’m really confident around Buster he will be much more calm with me, in any situation.

I would see if your vet offers nail clipping for a small fee. Mine charges about $7. Otherwise do you have anyone to help you? One person holding a rabbit and the other clipping works well in my household.

Definitely a necessary step in the grooming process though. There’s nothing really that will file them down without clipping.

I usually hold the buns and my husband will clip. Sally puts up quite a fight so we will be taking her to the vet next go round. but Harley doesn’t do anything. Gosh I felt so bad earlier today because he has black nails and my husband clipped a little too short on one of his nails! I didn’t even notice until I saw blood on my jeans. He didn’t even fight or pull away indicating my husband cut too short! Sometimes I wish Harley wasn’t so laid back and at least tell us if something hurts him!
