So I will be getting a 8-week old Holland Lop, right now I am only planning on only having one bunny, but I may add another down the line. My idea is to use an old dog crate (I think this is it http://www.petco.com/product/13372/Petco-Premium-2-Door-Dog-Crates.aspx dimensions are 36″ L X 23″ W X 25″ H) I was wanting to add another level in it like this  but I don’t know if it’s tall enough. Then in addition I was going to leave the front door of it open to lead directly out into a NIC cage attachment. I am not sure how big I am going to try to do 1.5-2 grids wide (depending on space restrictions) and 4 long and 2 high. Is this enough space for one holland lop? He will spend a good amount of the day due to the fact that I am in school and my dad works. And if it was 2 grids high would I need a top? or should he be able to stay inside? Any help would be great. And if you need more info to give me the best advice just ask, and any other tips or advice for a new bunny owner would be much apperciated

Do you already have the dog crate? Can you get a standard xpen to attach to it when the bun is caged?

That’s an incredibly small enclosure for a house bunny …. please consider something much, much more roomy.

I already have the dog crate, and it wouldn’t just be the dog crate. There would be a NIC part attached that he would have access to all the time. The dog crate would just kind of be his ‘house’ and the NIC would be his play area. I am just wondering how big the NIC part should be.

The NIC pen should be at minimum about 3×4 grids and 3 grids high… but NIC grid pens don’t always work well because they are not as stable.

I had mentioned an xpen attached to the dog crate. That would be easier to get inside to clean, it is very sturdy, and it could be used as a stand-alone pen at some point if you wanted.

One bunny needs a minimum of 8 sq ft (4′ X 2′) with an additional 24 sq ft to exercise for at least 5 hours a day.

Your dog crate is 3′ X 1.9′ and that’s on the smaller side.

Adding a pen is a good idea but I would not recommend using NIC for pens. I used them as temporary housing recently and one of my buns used the grids to climb/escape and fractured his foot in the process. X-Pens don’t seem to encourage climbing and they are a lot sturdier.

I would attach an X-Pen and extend it as large as your space allows. The pens look like this:

You’re bunny will still need out of habitat time.

Mesaring things out, I realized I can’t fit the bunny’s home where I was going to put it. I am moving it to a diffrent part of my room where it will just be the NIC cage and no dog crate. I am planning on making it 3×5 maybe 6 and I am planning on adding multilevels…somehow lol
