Sam’s “cart” was originally designed for dogs, and I noticed that the bar at the bottom at the back didn’t allow Sam to put his longer feet under his center of gravity, and he seemed to want to do that.  I was so happy to learn from the manufacturer that they can do one without the bar, they call it “wheels to walk”–I guess in a lot of ways it’s like a rabbit-walker. . . Anyway, I should get it later this week, and I CAN HARDLY WAIT!

Yes, it’s me — Sam’s Mom. We had some trouble with the way it was set up with one email account so I closed that and opened a different one.

LOL – okay, I thought so but couldn’t remember your old name so I wanted to put it together in my mind.

Right now Sam has a “cart” (which is a bit like a wheel chair) so he can pull himself along with his front paws.  But his hind legs are getting stronger so he prefers to pull himself along without the cart and try to use the hindlegs.  So what we are having made will still give him some lift at the hips to help him position himself right but let him use his back legs more.  This isn’t a very good picture, but this is Sam in his cart: oh, darn, the picture is too big and I can’t resize it here.  I’ll post one later from home.

But basically he is getting stronger and moreinterested in doing things so I guess the cosequin and adequan are helping with the arthritis.

What happened with his back legs to cause problems? Is it permanent or is the wheelchair kind of like physical therapy to gain strength while having support?

It was a combination of things.  As he got older, he seemed shakier, and then one day he had a really frightening seizure that left his right leg much slower than his left.  When I took him to the vet, she couldn’t be sure what caused the seizure but she did take x-rays and tell me he had pretty bad arthritis of the knees.  I guess I didn’t manage the pain very well for him because he started moving less and less.  But then I started giving him more metacam and the vet had me start the adequan and cosequin and we make a point of playing twice a day and keeping things interesting for him and he really seems motivated to get strong again.

how awesome! one of my rabbits lost use of her back legs, which they attributed to arthritis and old age. had she been younger and healthier i totally would have looked for something like this.

did you ever see the video going around about a year ago about the disabled bunny who uses one of these and works at…somewhere, i don’t remember…with disabled kids to motivate them? i’ll have to look around for it.

i can’t wait to see pics!

Oh wow, I can’t wait to see pictures! I watched a video from one of the rabbit rescues in Texas the other day about a bunny who had both back legs removed and used a cart. It was actually really adorable/cool!

I’m so glad you are able to provide assistance to his little legs.

I’ve seen some neat little carts made with poly pipe that keeps them lightweight and sturdy.

Looking forward to seeing Sam’s new wheels.

It’s good they can do modifications that cater to each animals specific needs. Especially those that will aid them still using their limbs to a degree.

Yes, these are polypipe and they are much less expesnive and easy to work with than the more elaborate carts.

Sam has decided that now he’s feeling stronger again he wants to try and hop and pull himself around as much as he can.  Due to the seizure, there is a chance that some of it is neurological, some arthritis.  It looks to me like his right foot is cramped in a curve, which may be neurological or maybe is something that can be massages away and worked with.  But I also wonder if in the end he won’t do better getting used to wearingsome sort of brace or splint on it . . . . Just to watch and wonder and think.
