Now that my little Barnabus is all healthy again, his diet needs some serious sorting out!! He isnt a massive fan of hay, loves his pellets and loves pretty much all veggies … but both vets i have seen (and my own common sense) have told me that he definitely needs to put on a fair bit of weight. So what should i do guys!? I know not to rush his weight gain by giving him ‘sweets’ or anything really sugary/fatty, but what about unlimited pellets and hay?

I’m really not sure, so any advice you guys could give me would be great! At the minute i’m just so happy he’s back to normal :3

Thanks in advance anyone, and for all your support whilst me and Barn were going through our hard time! x

And here’s a pic of Barney meeting my beautiful Sealpoint Himalayan Persian for the first time

Since he’s had some slow gut issues, I don’t think I would do unlimited pellets but in any event you should discuss this with the vets if they feel his weight is a concern.

I wouldn’t do unlimited pellets since he will just go for the pellets because he isn’t fond of hay. Maybe do alfalfa pellets, limited, and unlimited hay. As long as he is on a healthy diet he will/should gain weight at a slow, healthy pace. Him and your persian look a lot alike

I’m so glad Barney is feeling well again. He and your kitty make a very well matched pair!

Ok, i will go steady with the pellets and see if that encourages him to eat more hay
He and Misu (short for Tiramisu) are a great pair, she only has 3 teeth and is a 16 year old rescue girl … but she still has a little bounce in her when she sees Barney!

I love that picture! How cute are they together?!

What kind of hay have you given him before? oat or wheat might be good options. You could try him on Lucerne hay also since he is still young. The longer fur breeds can do with a bit more protein in their diets.

I vaguely remember reading that the fluffy bunnies don’t seem to carry much weight under all the fur. I do not know if that’s accurate or not.

It’s true that fluffies are not fat – the few I’ve had have always been thin (but not underweight) – I think that the fluffy fur is very misleading too.
