My little bunny is around 1 – 1/2 years old. I plan on rescuing another bunny sometime because I’d like to have a friend for her. But before this, I’d like to get her spayed, just in case. I was wondering if there is an age of which a rabbit gets too old to be spayed? I don’t want to get her spayed if there is a high risk of complications. I’ve looked on the internet and have gotten many mixed answers, but I’d feel better about taking advice from you guys! I also tried to phone the vet that I take my other animals to, the lady told me that after 6 years old, is too old but too me, I don’t think she seemed very sure.. I just wanted your guy’s opinions before I seek out a more rabbit savvy vet, because I would have to go two hours from my city to a bigger one. I would just feel more comfortable with the vets there because they have more experience with rabbits.

That age is not too old at all! It is advised to get her spayed because females typically have a higher chance of getting reproductive cancers by the age of 4. Have you established a rabbit savvy vet yet? Some of the questions that bun parents like to ask is if they want the rabbit to fast (Which is NOT recommended, bunnies cannot throw up!) and if they give pain meds afterward.

1 to 1 1/2 is definitely not too old. A rabbit at any age who is healthy and who’s bloodwork shows the liver and kidney’s functioning properly should be fine.

For a procedure like a spay, it is worth going a bit further for a vet who has experience rather than risking your rabbit to a vet who has little to no experience – in my opinion.

I agree with ChaCha and Sarita, she’s not too old at all.

Here’s a list that may help you find a rabbit savvy vet:

Thanks so much! I’ll be spending the day calling vets in the next city to see how experienced they are with rabbits. Besides the fasting, and the pain meds, is there any other questions you think I should ask to see how much experience they have with rabbits?

My Pepper is 2 and will be going in very shortly for hers as will her daughters who are 1, plus Pascal my foster fail who needs to be neutered so he can move into the bunny room with the others. I have been waiting for my bonus to come through (which it did this week) so I am going to have a very stressful month or so.
