Today Yohio, my newly rescued rabbit, did the bunny 500s in the run. Then he jumped into his digging box and flopped, but not like a normal flop, it was sideways. He sort of rolled around, with his feet in the air, then collapsed on his side and lay down much like a kitten and my heart nearly stopped, I thought he’d had a seizure and dropped dead. I went into the run and he immediately popped up and ran away from me so he was in no way drowsy or so, I caught him and sat him in my lap and gave him a craisin which he ate without any reluctance.

Bam never ever does stuff like that. When he flops it’s just his hind legs and only very, very seldom he puts his cheek down and do the dead rabbit.

I wish I could’ve filmed Yohio’s behaviour but it happened so fast. What do you think of this? Is it normal or a sign of sth bad?

I’ve seen pictures of baby bunnies lying with their feet in the air, they really freaked me out when I first saw them, he’s either younger than he looks, or just very floppy. Are these pics similar?

I’ve had rabbits do this in the past. Some buns are just better floppers than others.

              Goodness what extremely cute baby-bunnies!!!
Yohio spent just a split second with his feet in the air, then fell over on his side and

stupid me for not googling first! This is what I mean: http://cottontailcentral.wordpress.com/ but yohio had his feet a bit closer to his front paws so the back was slightly more arched. Reminded me of a sleeping kitten. He closed his eyes. I never see Bam close his eyes except right after his neuter when he was still drowsy from the meds.

Then wham! he was up again and on his four feet because I disturbed him.

I love a full out flop! But I know what you mean about it being scary the first time you see one. I only had Spockie for a week, and didn’t know any bunny owners, nor had I found this or any other website. So the first time he did a full side flop, head flat, motionless, I called my vet in a panic. They got one of their assistants who was their “bunny expert” on the phone and I described him. She said, “I’m not certain, but I think he’s being cute.” Just then he popped up and bounced around.
                Lesson learned.
I happen to think that they originally did this in the wild because it convinced predators that they were dead, and if a predator loses interest, or lets up it’s guard thinking they are dead prey, they can suddenly jump to life and zoom away unexpectedly. So it’s pretty convincing.

I’m so relieved! I thought I knew what a flop was because I’ve had Bam for 1,5 years, but this was way more dramatic than anything he ever does.

Yohio has his man-bits, there’s no doubt about that what so ever, so he can’t be that young.

That they originally did it in the wild to fool predators makes a lot of sense.

Sounds like he’s feeling very happy! Bunny 500’s and super flops!

That sounds really cute, actually. I wish you got it on tape. Nugget flops and passes out after running the bunny 500 too. They really know how to tire themselves out! Once we saw him flop over repeatedly because he just couldn’t get the “right” flop. Here’s one of the bad/awkward flops with his legs in the air haha.

                        How incredibly cute!
Today I didn’t see the actual flopping, but I saw him flopped – on his side, like a cat, in his digging box with his head resting on the edge of the box like on a pillow. The sun shone on him, (that added to the cat-likeness) and he looked so contented. This time I didn’t disturb him!

Today someone called about the ad in the paper. Turned out it was about another rabbit that had ran away in another community-garden, on the other side of town, a black rabbit , not a yellow one. But when the caller said: “I think you have found my rabbit” my immediate thought was Oh, no! I was happy when it turned out Yohio wasn’t his rabbit, but of course it’s sad that another rabbit is on the run.

Little update: Today he did the b 500s + full flop while I was in the run with him. He also lay down beside me and let me pet him, incl. his head. Not a full melt but a half-melt. He licked the skin of my arm for the first time, before he’s only licked at my clothes.

Improved the run with an extra shelf along one side of the run and a wooden hidey-box. Spent all day in the allotment garden. Beautiful, warm spring day.

The first time I saw it I nearly had a heart attack! It’s very cute though, a very happy cute bunny flop Kokanee used to do this all the time, and Rupert still does though its not as dramatic now
