So with a lot of deliberation and studying on rabbits I have decided to get one, Came full prepared almost except the cage. Ive bought her for 10$ from someone who couldn’t care for her anymore, It came with a cage, pine shavings and some junk food pellets (I threw the shavings and food out). but the cage seems a bit small and cant get a hidey house inside.

So far she has been pretty nice, Tolerates being pet but somewhat territorial since shes not spaded.

I was wondering if a dog crate is ok for rabbits? If it is I was thinking of getting something like this…

        http://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/exltra-large-wire-kennel/10182590?trail=SRCH%3Adog+crate&fromPLP=true&ancestorID=alldept&searchString=dog+crate&moduleName=S0011&startSearch=yes&fromSearchBox=true&addFacet=SRCH%3Adog+crate#

As long as you get the extra large one, dog crates can be ok, if paired with lots and lots of exercise. (4 hours or more a day where possible!) But could you look into xpens or NIC condos? They’re excellent for keeping buns in, more so than a dog crate because they’re customisable, to make maximum use of the available space.

I had the issue where I couldn’t find condo grids, so that went out of the window. I was going to use a dog crate too, because I figured an xpen wouldn’t fit into my space exactly. But a few other members suggested cutting the xpen in half, then cable tying the two grids back together, halfway down the grid, so it would fit. Pretty clever! So that’s my plan, maybe you could figure out something similar? Dog crates are pretty much like cages unless you can get a really really big one!

I too have my bunnies in 4 foot long dog crates, for the girls I made a 2nd level out of timber and plywood with a ramp. They love it and spend a lot of time running up and down between the levels, as Bunnygirl said, make sure that your bunnies get some out of the crate time.

Thanks, I was actually trying to get a x pen, But I cant seem to find a place that sells them, (my hometown is fort erie).

There was a very cheap one amazon.com for 35$ But I dont think it ships to canada.

If you can provide a link to one that sells one somewhere close to where I am that would be nice!

@toady Yep I plan to have her out at least 5 hours a day, or more if I got the time.

Are you open to ordering online? Petsmart sells this:
                http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753745&lmdn=Crate+Style&f=PAD%2FpsNotAvailInUS%2FNo
The extra large is the same price but it’s a little bigger 4′ X 2.5′.

Cheaper than a dog crate would be an X-pen you can get a 4′ X 4′ pen for 40-50 dollars.

I honestly don’t believe that a dog crate – even the largest – is large enough. Unless you only intend to have the bun in there for a couple of hours a day tops.
