Hello, Oscar is a 7 year old American rabbit and he is neutered. Petunia is 3 and a half and she is a Dutch rabbit. Petunia was recently diagnosed with a tooth absest. The vet is not sure how long we have left with her she goes to the vet every two months for check ups and tooth trims. Would it be a good idea to get a third rabbit so that when Petunia moves on it will be easier on Oscar?

Just like people, rabbits love and need time to grieve and grow from a loss. I would think it would be better to let him just enjoy Petunia as long as possible without the complication of trying to work a third rabbit in. After Petunia has passed, you can make extra time to comfort him and then search for and get spayed/neutered another rabbit when he is really ready to accept a new friend into his life. He will doubly appreciate the new friend after a period of loneliness and grieving and from a bonding stnadpoint it just seems like it would be a lot easier.

I agree with Sam’s Mom – let he and Petunia enjoy their time together. I also believe it would be more stressful for Petunia if she is not in good health to be stressed with bonding to another rabbit and that is not a good thing.

Hopefully Petunia will live a good long life though – regular dental trims can help rabbits live a good long life really – it’s not a death warrant.

I agree with both – bonding can be so incredibly stressful and you wouldn’t want the stress to interfere with her healthy at this particular time. It’s also possible that adding in a third bunny can break the bond your two already have. So I would just let them enjoy their time together.

Good luck with Petunia! Keep us updated on how she is doing!
