I am a sudden Bunny Mom(rescue a bunny that a photographer used as a prop and tossed on the side of the road).

So, I got  ”Rabbit Starter Kit” cage from Petsmart.  It’s nice, but WOW is it a pain to clean, so I’m looking for advice.

What is the easiest cage to clean?  What do you put in the bottom of your cage?

Right now, I’m putting this bedding stuff that I got at Petsmart on the bottom of the cage.  And I also put a litterbox in the corner, which the bunny seems oblvious of.  The bedding seems ridiculously expensive if I’m going to throw it away daily!!

You do not need to put bedding on flooring of the cage. just put it in the litter box. otherwise he will get confused on where to go and just go everywhere! Also, those cages aren’t large enough for a bun. What I did was made my own cage out of C&C cubes and used play mats that day cares usually use for the flooring. Then every couple of days I sweep out the cage to clean up the stray hay and shredded paper from the phone book that sally likes to destroy

Note: if you use those foam mats, watch very carefully the first few days because some buns will chew on them and if that is the case you will need to find a different flooring.

What I use for the litterbox is the feline pine from petsmart. It was like $10 for a 40 lb bag!

            Hi there,

Bun cages are actually pretty easy to keep clean once you have a litter tray. Buns usually prefer nothing on the bottom and like the hard plastic. If you just have a litter tray, you’ll just need to clean that every 2nd day or so, depending on how dirty it gets.

I have two bunnies that can’t be on carpet and another that is super messy (tosses hay around, etc). This is my set up:
               photo DexPenHab_zps38ebac97.jpg
(They’re normally in a different room with carpeting).

It’s an x-pen with a wood base/borders and vinyl flooring. It’s incredibly easy to clean. I can just sweep up the mess and call it good. The other one I have also has a lid because my messy bunny, Monty, also likes to escape any enclosure he’s in.

I would only put bedding in the litter box as bedding on the ground can confuse a bunny (they think the whole thing is a litter box). Your bunny will also pick where it likes to potty so you want to place the litter box wherever they favor for easier litter box training.

I think xpens are the easiest by far.
