My bunny, Barnaby used to love everyone and give everyone lots of kisses, but lately (since he began puberty) he doesn’t like any of my friends. Today he growled and scratched/bit one. He has NEVER bit or scratched me (purposely scratched anyway) and he likes to cuddle and groom tons, but he only likes one of my friends and is mean to the rest. Will this go back to normal after puberty, or is he just a one woman bunny? I noticed in general he likes my male friends more…

I am concerned because I am leaving the country (collecting data for my graduate thesis in Africa) and he is staying with my friend (the only one he likes). When I am gone, he gets agitated and misbehaves (chewing on nice furniture, pooping on beds). Advice?

How old is Barnaby? Are you planning on neutering him?

There isn’t really an “after puberty” unless he’s neutered. If his issues came on with his hormones it’s likely that altering him would help with his behavioral problems.

Oh yes! If his testicles have descended, I’d make sure you get to him the vet for neutering, preferably before your trip. You don’t want him biting, wreaking havoc, or destroying things at your friend’s place!

He was neutered 6 weeks ago.

He first started bring mean to my friends about 8 weeks ago

Most rabbits feel more comfortable with certain people – that is pretty typical. It’s good he’s staying with your friend that he trusts so I cannot imagine that would be a problem.

I don’t consider his behavior mean either – rabbits are prey animals and the reason they behave aggressively is because they are protecting themselves – aggression means fear not hate with rabbits.

That makes a lot of sense. The people he likes are laid back like me and a lot of my girl friends are pretty loud. Thank you any other advice you all have would be much appreciated, but this is relieving.

Glad he’s neutered already! That’ll make it easier!

Since his neuter is still somewhat recent, he may still be having some hormone surges too, but I agree with Sarita. You’ll find that there will always be people he likes more than others. The burden falls on you to protect your guests by telling them to give him space. No one should be reaching into his pen or trying to grab at him. If he approaches them, they can follow his lead.

True. I just think it is weird that he dislikes people he used to like. He is a house bunny, so free reign (of my bedroom at least) but even I don’t bug him if he is in his litterbox or cage ( he wouldn’t be mad, but it feels rude).
