I found our vet that works with exotic animals from the HRS web site.  We recently had to board them – and I asked the office to clip their nails…and also asked if they could vaccinate our buns.  The nurse said that they don’t vaccinate rabbits.

I’ve read that we should have our buns vaccinated.  What are your thoughts?

          What country are you in?

I’m in the US and as far as I’m aware it’s not common practice to vaccinate bunnies here. I believe they vaccinate bunnies in the UK (and other countries I’m just not sure which).

You should vaccinate rabbits, and it is common practice in the UK. There is panacur, a wormer and parasite remover given every 6 months for nine days and the double myxomatosis and VHD vaccination given yearly. The common practice might be because of the myxomatosis, is it a widespread disease in america? There is also a fly strike spray given at summer. Only the VHD and myxi are given at the vets.

There are no vaccinations approved for use for rabbits in the US currently, so they do not get any.

Myxo does show up here, but it’s not as common as it is in Australia it seems.

In the south of Sweden where I live myxi- vaccination is a must. VHD is also recommended. There are outbreaks of myxi every year in the wild rabbit population here, it’s so sad to see the poor sick bunnies with their eyes swollen shut. They won’t move away when you approach them because they are blind and confused. Sometimes they try and get away but slowly and clumsily and blindly, and it’s so sad your heart breaks.

Bunnylova 123, what spray against fly-strike do you use? I have a permethrin & pyrethrine-spray meant for use on horses and dogs, but it’s not really rabbit safe.

I’m in the US – so I guess that’s why they wouldn’t vaccinate our buns 🙁

Same in Canada. No vaccinations. From what I’ve read the risk is very low so no need to worry.
