I have a big wooden … er, I’m not sure what to call it. It’s a big wooden structure that has 4 levels on it. We use it to store our random junk in the laundry room.

It looks like it’d be the perfect rabbit cage and would fit perfectly in my room. But I’m a little concerned for size. It’s certainly wide enough, tall enough, and has enough levels, however there are a couple of things that are smaller than I’d prefer.

        5 feet tall

        42 inches wide

        20 inches deep

15 inch space between the levels

The depth and space between the levels is what I think is a bit too small. However, I think I would have an xpen in front of the cage and the rabbit(s) would be out a lot of the time in this xpen(and of course then I’d let them out to roam around the house). But, I do have a (semi) fix to the depth problem!

The second level’s floor would be cut in half, so the rabbits can hop up to the second floor and have enough room to stretch their back and stand up. Then, there would be a little ramp from the second floor to the third floor.

I would take the floor off the fourth floor and put that on top as the “roof”. Then, there would be 26 inches of space on the third floor so the rabbits can stretch and stand up. (The flooring would probably be linoleum with a seagrass mat or fleece covering it for traction)

As for closing in the sides, there would be wire around the cage. There would be two big wire doors(with wood “bordering” it) that would cover the front of the cage, along with two door handles and some sort of latch side by side.

Is it still too small(I plan on getting a small-medium breed from a shelter)? Could two rabbits live comfortably in this?(I want to get a pair)

Also, did I make any sense to you explaining that?(I’m bad at explaining things! )

It really depends on what kind of buns you get. At the current depth and space between levels, it’s actually fine for at least two dwarfs, though you should still cut part of it so they can fully stretch up.

IMO each level should have an area that the bun can fully stretch both vertically and horizontally and for the entire level, they should be able to sit up.

Like you said, my concern would be the space between the levels. I don’t think it would be suitable because rabbits need to be able to stand on their hind feet without their ears touching the roof at all times. Even if your rabbit will be out of the cage a lot in an expen, i still don’t think its a good idea because they need that height at all times.

Here is a quick sketch of what the cage would look like, more or less.

30 inches of “standing” space on third floor.

On half of the first level, there would be 27 inches of standing space because level two would be cut in half.

Still too small? I’m really iffy about it now.

Too small. Minimum for a cage built up for a small/medium rabbit would be 2 feet wide by 4 feet long. I think minimum height would be 24 inches tall each level. That is what my Leith Condo is (it’s 3 levels) and it would be the minimum standard I would put a small/medium rabbit in. Granted I didn’t build this myself – not good at that kind of stuff but I wouldn’t put a rabbit in anything smaller – my condo which know has a solo 5 pounder had originally 2 small rabbits but one passed away so it’s just the one rabbit in it – they both were smaller so they fit just fine. I don’t think I’d put a rabbit larger than 5 pounds in it though.
