I’ve been trying to get Elvis a companion for some time now but with college expenses draining the bank its had to be put on hold. Within the past six months or so I’ve noticed that he has lost some of his energy and spunk when he’s out playing. Part of this is probably due to his age and he’s otherwise healthy. I thought that giving him a stuffed animal for a temporary companion may excite him a bit and get him playing more. I purchased a cute seal stuffed animal and gave it to him to see what he’d do. He wasn’t sure what to think at first but he quickly started interacting with it and grooming it. He’d lick it’s face and then put his head down waiting to be groomed. Then he’d zoom off and do some binkies. I watched him closely with it to make sure he wouldn’t chew it to shreds and he seemed fine. I started leaving him alone with it when he was outside of his cage and I’d always find him snuggled up close to it so I had no worries. Today however I walked into my room and found that he chewed half of the seals flipper. It doesn’t appear that he ingested anything, he only chewed it. I took it out and cleaned up the stuffing and set the seal outside of his xpen right out of reach. I came in later to find Elvis laying down against the xpen by the seal. SO know that Elvis really likes the company of the toy but I’m not sure why he chewed it up. Maybe he got frustrated with it because it wasn’t interacting back with him, I don’t know. He’s got loads of toys to chew on like boxes and phone books and wicker baskets. Any thoughts???

He probably knows it isn’t real, maybe he just thought it was warm and fun, like little children playing with dolls, then cutting all its hair off or covering it in felt tip pen. Maybe he was barbering, but thought the seals flippers were massive whiskers.

Some bunnies just like to chew on material things. While I think it’s great for buns to have a plushie friend (my Olivia has 2), I caution everyone to be careful and watchful when giving stuffies. I gave one to Bindi a few years back and he ignored for it for about a week until one morning, I found it’s face chewed off. He must have ate some of the stuffing because he got blocked up and needed 4 days of intensive care. We came very close to losing him.

Bindi enjoys stuffed animals when he comes out for supervised play time. He likes to lay with and groom them.

            How old is Elvis?

Is there anything that I can put on it like vinegar to keep him from chewing it or should I just take it away completely?

And thanks BeaBunny! He has a cute little comb over, thats where the name came from

I think eating the vinegar might be worse than chewing it, try getting a dog toy, they’re probably more sturdy, and don’t cost that much. You can get ones without stuffing. http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Dpets&field-keywords=soft+toy

One of Olivia’s stuffies is a bear made for a baby with embroidered eyes and the other is a rabbit dog toy. Baby or dog toys are the best choices if you are going to offer a stuffie.

I went to my local pet shop and they had a catalogue of “animal” teddies and I ordered Raymond the Rabbit, there was Harriet the Hare, Ollie the Owl, Sam the Seal, it was quite bizarre picking a “girlfriend” for my little bun. He doesn’t interract with it much but he does sometimes groom it and it is perfectly animal safe. Do you have an independent pet shop that might have such a thing, as opposed to huge chain of pet store?

I actually would check out baby stores and small pet shops, but frankly, I think he’s not that into it and you’d be wasting more money and possibly putting him at risk for digestive problems. I have always admired the members here whose bunnies love their stuffies. Sammy met a couple I got for her, groomed them, put her head down, was not groomed back, and ignored them all ever since. She just didn’t get the point of one. Sounds like your bunny is similar, only wants chew toys instead. I think you should invest in willow toys that are made to be chewed, or get hard plastic baby keys that can be tossed.

One caution: never get the stuffed animals that are made with beans. If those get opened by chewing they can be seriously dangerous. That’s why a pet toy or a baby toy that is made with safe stuffing is better. I say this here on your post, but it’s a caution to everyone who’s reading it.

I’m a fairly new bunny owner, so I never really thought of getting my rabbit a stuffed animal. Is it something you’d recommend?

I had one for Thane before we had him neutered and he liked to take his… Frustrations… out on it! Since his neuter he has no interest really. He barely interacts with the actual physical lady bunny I got for him lol! He prefers human company

Last month, I bought my dear a pvz plastic toy set. He seems likes it very much. I won’t buy stuffed animal toys which will be destoryed.
