I’ve given Vienna a leaf or so of cabbage for many years as part of her staple diet, but while surfing the internet I found a list of plants saying cabbage is not safe, all the information seems to be divided. I’m very worried now, the cause of Oreo’s death is unknown, but the vets thought it might’ve been something toxic he ate. Is it safe to keep feeding? I’ve never seen any ill effects, and have only fed just cabbage once ( when we ran out of veggies &nbsp The house rabbit society says it is safe, but other sources say it’s poisonous, and others say only in small quantities .I don’t want to stop feeding it if it is safe, it’s a very good, cheap food source, but if I do has anyone got any other staple diet suggestions.

BTW:she does get a lot of other veg: broccoli, spinach, celery, coriander, kale, lavender, sprouts, chard, carrot and tops, dandelion, chamomile, mint, bell pepper, banana, apple etc

They can get gas from cabbage. It’s not toxic but since it has low nutritional value as compared to deeper green varieties of cabbage and kale, and can cause gas, it’s not recommended. I give my bun a small piece every day. In Sweden lots of bunnies get cabbage as a staple during winter because it’s cheap and available everywhere. The rabbit I had as a child ate cabbage. She was at least 5 before she was scared to death by a Dachshound (cabbage-unrelated).

I only give the really dark green ‘wrinkly’ cabbage from a local organic farm shop, the other white cabbage is just to keep things interesting, she likes homemade coleslaw ( without the mayo, of course )

I was surprised to find cabbage listed as a vegetable (rather then a green) in the article on suggested greens and veggies on the HRS’ site. As far as I was concerned that cancelled out the benefits of feeding it from my point of view (a reasonably priced large green (I thought) available in winter) but it was there and so I presume safe for them to eat.

By wrinkly cabbage I guess you mean Savoy-cabbage? My bun loves the deep green outer leaves.

I think it’s the white cabbage only that’s considered not good for rabbits in larger amounts.

Yes, sorry I’m not very good at remembering names

Didn’t mean it as criticism! Just to specify what cabbage we were discussing! I don’t know the name of half the stuff they sell at the farmer’s market where I live.

Spring is very late this year, I long for stuff to start growing so I can pick stuff for my bun. But not even the grass has started to turn green yet, and there’s still snow here and there.

No, I didn’t take it as criticism either, don’t worry.

My buns love a little bit of cabbage if I have it going! Never more than a few bites, but my vet said it was okay.

I avoid any veggie that is said to cause gas like cabbage and broccoli.

Where did you read that cabbage is poisonous?
Mine have had (and love!) cabbage before. And Brussel sprouts are a big hit.

I’m not sure about gas… I think some rabbits are perhaps more sensitive to certain veggies, even ones not typically thought to be problematic. So i guess moderation is key. Jers and Rumball have no issue with broccoli, cabbage or sprouts Yet my foster seems a bit off the next day if I give a little broccoli. Every rabbit is different. Btw, I don’t feed all 3 of those vegetable at one time.

It used to be thought that things like cabbage and broccoli cause gas in rabbits but the new thinking is that this is not the case – they do not have the same gi tract that humans do.

My poor little bun doesn’t like broccolli or brussell sprouts, they give him an upset stomach (

I can’t remember who it was, Stormy I think, that I gave a really small piece of broccoli and he got bad gas.

I think I’ve read that too, that cabbage and cabbagish veggies aren’t causing gas in bunnies, that it’s an old assumption bacause people often get gas from cabbage. Still, rather safe than sorry, Bam can only have small pieces. The wild rabbits will devour the kale I grow if I don’t fence it in. So last autumn I took great care to fence it in with chicken-netting, and one winter morning, every plant of kale had been snipped off and stolen. Definitely not by rabbits, it must’ve been a HUMAN. Weird, though. Kale cost next to nothing.

bam, that happened to my sister also. Turned out it was her little humans that did it. They snacked on it too! Lol
