I noticed that one of my buns has been grooming himself a TON today. He has also been using has back leg to scratch under his ear. It isn’t constant, but often-ish. I switched hay brands today ( I mixed the two ), and I put his hay into a trash bag ( as I always do, a woman at the HRS suggested it ) that was very lightly scented. Other than that, he has been fine

Should I be concerned? I’m so paranoid these days, I don’t know what to make of it.

He’s not shaking his head like his ears are bothering him?

Both of mine seem to obsess over their ears a lot. Not really scratching, but they like to groom them a lot. I was concerned at first but the vet never found anything wrong. I think they just like to primp their ears a lot. I’m taking that your situation is new behavior for your bun?

Rabbits do spend quite a bit of time grooming and scratching their ears and putting their foot in their ear, and then licking their foot is also typical behavior.  But it’s when you notice a “change” in behavior or excessive scratching, or a focus on one ear then it’s a good idea to look further into it.  Could just be a bug bite, or mites or nothing at all — but just keep observing to see if a vet visit might be warranted.

As far as bagging up the hay — you said it was scented…do you mean the bag?  If so, I would not store the hay in that. Not that it would be harmful, but the hay could soak up some of that scent and become unappealing.    Either way, when you put hay in a plastic bag, I recommend poking tiny little holes in the bag to allow the hay to breath and not gather in too much moisture. You can take a fork and just poke the bag about 5 times throughout.   If you are going to get hay from the plastic bag daily, you may not have to worry about doing that as opening the bag should provide air movement, (and I would stir up every week with your hand, but if you keep it there and transfer a big part of it to another bin, that’s when poking air holes in the trash bag may be a good idea.

I did put holes in the bag. He’s better now. I think I just get really paranoid. He is fine
