Both my rabbits are litter trained however sometimes they just decide to pee anywhere they feel like in their cage. I’m not sure why, it happens at different times and I can’t pinpoint any one thing that would cause them to do this. Yet they have never ever had a single accident in our bedroom where they are allowed to free roam 8+ hours a day, They always go back to their cage to do their business. So I’m wondering are these random accidents in different places in their cage even real accidents. I feel like if they were actually having accidents then they would do so in my bedroom as well, but they don’t. Both my rabbits are fixed and there’s no change in any other behavior. No change in eating or pooping. Although I did just buy them a bigger litter pan (somebunny’s butt got too big for the last one) this behavior happened with the old one as well and they started using the new one right away. I just watched my male bunny have an accident in the cage and as soon as he was done he hopped out of the cage so I picked him up and placed him in the litter pan. He did hop out and thump but then he hopped right back in and did some poops. I honestly felt like he was saying Yes I know what this is for and I do use it.  These accidents also only happen on the bottom floor of their cage never on the top 2 levels where they sleep at night although they do take afternoon naps on the bottom floor it’s not where they sleep most of the time. I had first thought it was because there was only one litter pan and that if one bunny was using it then the other would go someplace else but it seems like all these accidents happen when the litter pan is free. I’m honestly starting to wonder if they do this as a way of communicating with each other. I’m mad you for eating from my bowel so I’m gonna pee where you took a nap last sort of thing. I feel like it’s mostly my male bunny who does this and since he is less dominate that it’s his passive aggressive way to say he’s upset. Although I’ve seen my female have these “accidents” as well just not as often. It’s never constant either sometimes it’ll happen once a day for a few days then not again for another week or more. I guess I’m just wondering if this is behavior I should attempt to do something about or should I leave it alone since it never happens in “My Territory” only theirs.

It’s just territory marking, saying to any bunny that might accidently wander into your house that that place is theirs. Clean it up with a small amount of vinegar, and it should be OK. Otherwise just leave it.

What is in their house if I may ask? Is there bedding on the flooring or just in the litter box?

My girl bun is free roam and sometimes decides she wants to be a brat and poop right outside of her litter box.

There’s no bedding on the floor it’s just thick cardboard on top of plexiglass on the bottom floor and then cardboard with towels on the top for the top 2 levels.

I have not managed to litter train my bun at all, he has two toilets in his cage and he still manages to poop all over his cage, I have tried sawdust, no sawdust, newspaper, no newspaper, nothing at all, towel and various different strategies in his two toilets too. Nothing I do can get him to poop IN his toilet, just all over his cage, however, as he is soo good and doesn’t pee or poop ANYWHERE in my house, just in his cage, I’ve just accepted that he’s a muck pup and is happy to live in his poop, so I’m just counting my chickens and have decided that’s the way it is x
