We are getting either a flemish giant and angora hybrid or a flemish giant rabbit this week. Im just wondering how long a 10lb bag will last for a 15-20lb rabbit.

Your rabbit will need at least a cup, perhaps 1,5, depending on brand of pellets and age of rabbit, per day.

I weighed 1,5 cup of Oxbow bunny basics, it was 7 ounces (or 0.4375 pounds). If the rabbit is under a year, it will need more.

10 pounds equals about 20 cups. Feeding a cup a day, a bag will last 20 days.

However, even with large rabbits, it’s good to reduce the quantity of pellets in favor of fresh vegetables and hay. If your rabbit is an adult, you may be able to feed less pellets and stretch them out.

I assume you’ll be buying hay in bulk? Do you have a farm source or will you be buying large boxes of hay?

I get bermuda hay from a local feed store.

10 pounds won’t last long. I’ve yet to meet a Flemmie over 15 pounds too – seems that 13 to 15 is an average for them. You can get 50 lb bags and that is going to be the most economical – yes, shipping is expensive but overall, it’s going to be more cost effective for you. You will go through 10 pounds of food very quickly.

Sometimes you can ask the store you buy your bunny food at if they’ll order the large bag; often times they won’t charge you for shipping then.

Definitely bulk hay is the way to go… the litte bags of hay don’t last long with big bunnies.

Some stores like Dr F&S offer free shipping on any weight of order. I used to buy 50lb boxes of oxbow hay from them and never paid shipping, should be the same with pellets.

Purina is alfalfa based and has a lower fiber, higher calcium/protein content, so be aware of that if you decide to go with them.

I bought Purina rabbit chow complete. Its a 50lb bag and I plan on freezing most of it to keep it fresh. How long can it stay in the freezer and is there anything special I have to do after taking the pellets out of the freezer?

I don’t think you need to freeze the pellets. I think just keep them in a controlled environment is plenty fine. Freezing them is likely to cause moisture which can cause mold so don’t do that.

I thought after like 6 weeks the food started losing nutrition.

I’ve never heard this for rabbit pellets. Even so freezing isn’t going to stop the pellets from losing nutritional value if that is the case and most likely they are going to get freezer burn is not packaged properly.

I’ve kept rabbit pellets for over 6 weeks and usually do and I really do not worry about it. Obviously you don’t want to keep it 6 years :~) but these foods have preservatives in them too.
