Im planning on getting a flemish giant and angora hybrid male relatively soon. I have a small room adjacent to mine I was thinking of bunny proofing. The only thing I will need to leave are my insects to feed my bearded dragon. They do have heat bulbs over them. I was thinking that i could put them on shelves but how high should it be? I have a stand for a fish tank in there I was gonna use to entertain the rabbit but its painted and I dont know what kind of wood its made of. I do plan on neutering this bunny but at what age should I neuter it and how much will it cost? Also any other info will be appreciated. Ive had guinea pigs in the past are rabbits a lot like them?

OK first I would like to say research, research research!!! go to http://www.rabbit.org for a good source of information. as for having a Flemmie it is a LOT of work and they require a lot of space to play!!!

I would be careful of paint on wood if its older paint it might contain lead and cause issues. As for getting your bun fixed, Big Blue got fixed at 6 months old. You should go with your vets recommendation on that as it depends on weight health as well as age. and as for cost it can be anywhere from $100.00-$400.00, depending on where you live.

Neutering is pretty important for a male bunny. They will spray urine to mark territory if let intact and release a stinky musky scent. Unaltered rabbits of both sexes can also be destructive and aggressive. Fortunately, neutering is an easy procedure and is usually less expensive than spaying.

Ok. We may be getting a checkered giant mix from a shelter. Hes already neutered but hes 3 hours a way. Do sanctuaries ever meet people half way?

Is a tarp a good foooring until I knowm its potty trained? I went to home depot and for a 12x 10 piece of linoleum they said it would be 200.00 which is wayyy to much.

Some members have used shower curtains covered by a sheet or a blanket.

$200 does seem too much. Wow! Try look for remnants, left over pieces people want to resell after finishing a job.

I’ve only ever brought the thin variety of vinyl which is pretty cheap. I’m not wanting the cushioned varieties. I always use the stuff upside down as the back has a fine texture and gives traction yet is still washable.

You could use a tarp but the rabbit could tear or chew holes in it. Not all will do this, so if a tarp is relatively cheap you may want to go ahead and trial that.
If they can’t get to the edges of things, they’re less likely to dig it up.
Have you decided which rabbit you’ll be getting? If first time owner, I definitely recommend the neutered checkered giant!
Either way, your researching will better prepare you for whichever choice. : )

I put up the tarp last night. I taped the sides of the tarp onto the wall so that if it pees it wont seep into the carpet. We are going to look at the angora and flemish giant hybrids today at 2 because they are the closest. If we dont like any we will either get the checkered giant or get a full blooded flemish giant.
