My English Lop, Savannah, went to the vet about a month ago because I suspected a UTI. She did, but they also noted the drainage in her eyes and sent her home with eye drops. They were 2x a day, for I believe 10 days. I took her back and she was still have drainage from her eye, so the vet did a really good cleanse of her tear ducts and said one was clogged, and sent her home with different eye drops that I give her once daily. It’s been about two weeks now and there’s been no improvement. Her eyes are still having lots of drainage and white mucus.

I’m going to take her into the vet asap next week, but does anyone know what will be the next step? What will the vet decide to do next? Should I be worried that there is something worse going on?

Is she having drainage from both eyes, or just one? Do you remember what kinds of eyedrops you were giving her?

Did the vet check her teeth? That’s often the reason of eye drainage.

Yes, the vet checked her teeth. She’s a rabbit savvy vet and really fantastic. The first drops that were given twice a day were “Tobramycin Ophthalmic Solution” and the ones she’s on now, once a day are called “”Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Dexamethasone Ophthalmic Suspension”. Can these problems lead to blindness if they don’t get better?

It seems like your vet thinks that her eyes are infected/inflamed (tobramycin and neomycin and antibiotics, and dexamethasone is a medication used to reduce inflammation). Is her eye crusty at all, or are the whites reddish looking? I imagine your vet would probably want to find out whether the duct is blocked, or maybe do more to find out the specific bacteria causing the infection, if it is indeed an infection.

They’re not really crusty, but that’s probably because they’re constantly wet and draining. They took her out of the room last visit and were gone for a long time and came back and said they did some rinse because in one eye, the duct was blocked. But she said she got it unclogged. So I’m not sure, she never mentioned an infection though. The first visit she had a couple of ulcers, and the first drops were for healing those up she had said. I’m just worried what will be next. Surgery? Or just stronger medicine? Are there high risks for her eyes being like this for so long now and not getting better? I’m just nervous about my bun.<3

I doubt these problems can lead to blindness.

Many times a rabbit who had runny eyes has dental problems – did the vet check her teeth or do a head x-ray?

How old is Savannah? I ask because one of my rabbits had a teary eye when he was younger. The vet thought it was due to his having an asymmetrical face and his age too. His leaky eye did self resolve.

I can’t remember if this is correct, but a warm compress on the eye might help? It’s meant to be soothing anyway at least.

She is going to be 2 years old in June. I know English Lops have an average lifespan of 5 years. I wonder when she is considered “old”. I’ll try the warm compress, thank you!

Really, only 5 years old? I imagine many of those statistics might be based on rabbits used for breeding purposes or kept outdoors, not indoor rabbits who receive vet care.

I would be thrilled if her lifespan is longer because 5 years definitely isn’t enough to spend with my baby girl, especially since I didn’t adopt her until she was 9 months old! I’ve looked all over for different life expectancies for English Lops and it always says 5 years on all the websites! I don’t know if it’s because of their larger size or what. But I swear, Savannah is so well-taken care of, she’ll end up breaking the record for longest living English Lop! haha she’s very spoiled and loved and happy! Her vet appointment is early tomorrow morning so we will see what the vet says about her eyes!
