So I ordered some Oxbow online and the company sent me a 50lb bag instead of what I ordered. I called them and they told me I could keep it at no extra charge… 50lb’s is a lot of bunny food and would last my 3 a looooooong time but will it “go bad”? (even if used before the expiration date?)

If it’s not going to stay fresh I will donate it to my local rescue and purchase another smaller bag. But if it will be fine then I guess I’m set for a while. O.O

Just make sure you keep it in an air tight container if you can use it before the expiration date. Also, I heard you can put some in the freezer to keep it fresh. OR you can donate some and keep the rest. I mean, it’s really all up to you

Nah, it should be fine as long as it’s in a climate controlled area.

Maybe try making your own airtight portions? Divide it up into several large ziploc bags, pressing all the air out, and then store all of those bags in a separate airtight storage container. Or better yet, if you or anyone you know has one of those “foodsaver” machines that vacuum suck air out…

Do you have any friends/family members with a bunny? Or maybe they’d like to go half on what you paid for the big box…

Thank you for the suggestions! Looking at the 50lb bag (40lbs more than I ordered) was a bit overwhelming. Lol.

My mother has a food saver so I think the portioning will be my best solution. (I don’t know anyone else with bunnies).

Actually, I have to disagree with the “air-tight” container. It’s best that it is NOT air tight. You need to poke holes in plastic bins or bags. For Hay to stay fresh, it needs to breathe, otherwise moisture can get trapped. Even the big bags from Oxbow have tiny little holes in them. You will need to keep it away from any moisture contamination. (wet floors or anywhere it could get rained on). Many people will put big bales in big plastic bins — I suggest screwing little holes in the top. Small enough to keep little critters out, but enough to allow air in. Also, it’s a good idea to turn hay every once in awhile to allow the part that is not getting as much air, to the top.

When you do it this way, hay can be good for over year.

Oh, I’m sorry! I wasn’t very clear at all. It’s Oxbow Pellets not Hay. I just realized I didn’t write pellets anywhere in my post or comment. O.o It’s been a long week.

When I got my rabbit I contacted Oxbow to ask how long their pellets last, because he’s a little guy and only gets 2 tablespoons a day. I was told that once I open the bag, I should only keep them for about 2 months.

Of course, this might not apply if you quickly seal them in air tight containers.

At first I thought you were referring to hay too, but by some of the other responses I figured it was pellets.

Yeah, the food saver should work well!

if you ate it as cereal, it might have more fiber than fiber one…

Off-topic from the OP, but 50 lbs of hay really isn’t too much if your buns go through it.  My pair will go through a 50 lb box in maybe 6-8 months.  And since hay stays good for a long time with proper ventilation, it’s the best value (unless you can do farm bales, but we don’t have storage for that).  The Oxbow boxes of hay are super condensed, the box is ONLY about the size of a large end table.  I’d encourage you to give it a try if your guys eat a lot of hay.  We do have a little bit of waste in the litterbox because they like to pull strands out, but I’d say less than 10% get “wasted”.

OHH…okay, it’s pellets! Now just ignore everything I said, and follow what everyone else said! LOL
