I’m thinking about getting Dotty a new litter box.  Her old one (the one she is using) is the bottom of an old bird cage.  If any of you have ever seen the bottom of a bird cage, you’d notice that it’s pretty much a tray with a grate over it.  However, due to the urine, the grate of the bird cage bottom is getting extremely rusty.

I’m wondering if having a metal grate is a bad idea.  At the moment, I’m looking online trying to find something that won’t rust on me.

I want to get something that is effective, affordable, and EASY to clean.  Here is what I’m contemplating on getting:

Van Ness Sifting Cat Pan with Frame – Link

        Bergan Litter Gitter – Link

        Shake and Rake – Link

As you can see, all of these are plastic.  I also wouldn’t mind making my own either.  Thoughts and ideas?  =)

I also want to add that I’ve looked through the BB shop. I really like the screen idea. However, I would much rather have a hard bottom like a grate for Dotty because I don’t really want it to be actually touching urine. Furthermore, I would be using newspaper at the bottom of the pan under the grate instead of litter bedding.  I just find newspaper to be easier to clean.  You roll it up and throw away.

Also, another thing that I want to put into consideration is the size of the holes for the grates.  I don’t want it to be too big for her poo to fall through.  She seems to really enjoy eating them, and I read that there’s nutritional factors in that act of eating their poo for rabbits?

Thanks for that link! I’m reading up on it. Hmmmm!

Only thing is.. for $30 I feel like I could buy something much cheaper with the same outcome.
