I’m guessing that my perfectly litter trained bunny, Panda has reached sexual maturity.  I was waiting until she reached 6 months old in a few weeks to have her spayed.  She is suddenly peeing outside her littlerbox within a few feet of her habitat.  She has the run of a large room (fortuanately waterproof) until bedtime.  I’m guessing she is marking or reacting to a bit of a change in her littler box or both.  She had a large littler box which took up a lot of space in her habitat so I switched it out a few weeks ago for a smaller one but it was still big.  The first week it was fine but the second week I realized that she was peeing behind it so I put the old one back.  For a few days now she has been peeing not just outside her box but outside her habitat a few feet away from it out in the open.  so…  Is it marking or annoyance at the changes and of course what should I do?  Thanks, Barbara

Moving stuff around or switching stuff up can trigger territorial marking. So it could be a little of both (hormones and change). How long does she have until her spay? You could temporarily reduce her space by putting up an exercise pen.

Ditto, LBJ10. Bunnies don’t like when thing in their area are changed.

I am procrastinating about making the appointment (out of fear) but I’d better get on it. She was 3 months old when I got her and I’ve had her two and a half months. I was not crazy about the first vet I took her to although she seemed to know what to look for in the exam, but she wanted to do the spay then “before she got big and fat” . I knew little about buns then but enough to know that surgery on a 2 pound three month old bunny was not a great idea. Plus they wanted 650 – 900 dollars. Needless to say I am going to another vet for the spay. The place I’m taking her does lots and lots of them.

I’m guessing the pee issue probably has more to do with the litter box then hormones. We’ll see. Thanks for the replies

Both my bunnies had excellent litter box habits, until their hormones kicked in.  Then it was a free for all!  It cost me about $275 each – but it was well worth the money.  It took about 3-4 weeks before they settled back down after the surgery.
