Sorry guys, i promise this will be my last Barney related question for a while, you must all be getting bored Today the little guy has been grunting and thumping his feet a lot more than usual, Biscuit used to do this and then have some … alone time … with his toy bear. Is Barney also showing sexual frustration (as he was used as a breeding rabbit and is only 1), or is he frightened of something? When he was thumping, there were no loud noises or anything to frighten him, so i couldnt be sure it was that

        Thanks! x

I think it’s just a rabbit thing – small rabbits seem to be vocal at least in my experience – I guess it’s their way of communicating and it’s just up to you to decide what he’s trying to say.

Harley grunts and thumps too and he seems to do it when he is excited. He does it when he is running around like a wild child so I don’t think it’s sexual frustration with him as he is neutered, he just seems to be very vocal lol But it could be the case for your unaltered boy

Btw, I LOVE Barney! He is such a poof ball

No need to apologise for questions. You’re finding your feet with a new rabbit. It’s a big part of what this community is for.

He might have sensed something you can’t hear. Through hearing, vibrations or sense of smell. Is he going still, facing a particular direction, perking ears forward at all?

Thanks, it’s definitely useful to hear why other people’s buns thumb and grunt! He’s so small, it sounds just like a tiny piglet when he grunts! He also did it whilst racing around on my bed – so maybe it IS excitement Or he’s just talkative
Jerseygirl: nope he’s just acting like my normal little fluffy guy, maybe he’s just excited and happy as its only very recent, in the last 2 days that he’s been brave enough to leave the cage!
                Thankyou for the replies x

He’s probably still just getting used to his new territory.

I can’t get over how adorable he is. He just looks like a stuffed toy.

Yeah I hope so! He’s sitting next to me on the bed now eating his tea, seems totally relaxed but it still grunting and thumping every now and again! He still won’t go on the floor, he’ll either jump from his cage into my bed – but nowhere else!

My bunny grunts and thumps when she is annoyed about something ( if I take her to the vets or pick her up ) maybe you did something to annoy him without realising it. That has happened to me a few times. Maybe you dripped some water on him when replacing his water bottle/bowl or disturbed him while he was sleeping. I had a bunny who really held a grudge.

I was just sitting perfectly still, with him eating his tea so definitely hadnt annoyed him Guess it’s just his quirky little personality, bless him

My bunny Violet has just started thumping. I’ve had her for about 3 1/2 weeks. The first time was after we groomed her (she’s an angora-teddy, so we had to deal with a matted part of hair). About a week later, when I’ve been sitting on the couch (and she’s on the couch too), she circles around me and thumps. Just once or twice. I pet her and it stops. In this case, I think her thumping means that she wants attention or she just wants me to move out of the way because she’s too lazy to hop over my legs
