My friend recently got a beautiful black bunny called Raberto… She kept them as a child and is learning again how to care for him.. She keeps him as an indoor rabbit he has the run of the whole house and she loves him very much.

On Saturday last she had a few people over late at night she had put Raberto in a room that she thought no one would go into but people starting going in and out so my friend moved him upstairs.

The next day she noticed he wasn’t eating and ahead rang me. I know little about rabbits I actually rescue cats and dogs but I do have a chinchilla… I told her he would have to be syringe fed and brought to the vet on Monday morning. I went over to hee house and blended some pellets with water and started to syringe feed him. The vet gave an antibiotic and anti inflammatory injection and agreed with me it was the stress of Saturday night that put him off his food. Well after 2 days of syringe feeding him every 2 hours he started nibbling his hay again but still hadn’t pooped.. I asked the vet if I could give him a tiny amount of olive oil to help thing along.. It dint seem to work so I did a bit of research and discovered parsley root is good for constipation and what do you know he pooped this morning after he ate a load of parsley last night.. He’s eating little bits of hay and broccoli again but he’s still wolfing down the parsley.. The poop is still a bit slow to come though he’s only produced 5 pellets of poop today but two seemed lot bigger than normal.. I want to help him with his constipation but obviously need to avoid diarrhea as the vet says that’s life threatening.

The vet says he’s lucky to be alive still but we have him eating again at least.. I got him some pear and asparagus today just to induce his appetite a bit.. I’ve head canned pumpkin is good for constipation but they don’t sell that in Ireland ..

Now that hes eating on his own, the fibre from hay is the best thing for him. And fluids. If he normally drinks from a bottle, i’d offer him a bowl.

Be careful about introducing new foods. It can upset the gut at normal times. So his is likely sensitive at the moment. It’s great the parsley is appealing too him.
Most rabbits do well with parsley.

Thanks jerseygirl… He seemed to be doing well last night hoping when I go to my friends house this morning there’ll be more poop

while my friend Is at work Im checking in on him… I really hope he’s better soon but I understand because of a rabbits unique digestive system it probably takes time to recover..fluids thankfully haven’t been a problem with him even at his worst he was drinking well.

Could it be another few days before the constipation disapates? He has pooped like I said just not a lot… Surely that mean his digestive system is working again even if its slowed down if he produced poop it has to be working somewhat..

Perhaps you should try to rub his tummy a little? It has helped my rabbit who came down with a case of something stomach-related just the day before yesterday. This link was very helpful: http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/ileus.html

Ditto, Jersey. Lots of hay and fluids. That he is pooping some is good, meaning that he’s not completely blocked.

Just a quick update… Raberto is still eating fine but noticed a tiny amount of runny poop when I checked him this evening.. Im assuming that’s pretty normal after a bad dose of constipation I know in cats sometimes after their relieved of the blockage cause the constipation they can have runny stool for a day or two..

My rabbit had a little runny stool the other day when he had his tummy-problems and I’d rubbed his tummy, soon after he started to have normal poop, at first just a few, then more and more. Keep feeding him hay. Great to hear he’s doing so much better.

Glad to hear he’s feeling better. Tell your friend to keep a close eye on him for the next couple of days.

Thank you all for your healing vibes and kind words… Raberto seems to be doing great.. The slight diarrhea he has this morning sesame to have gone now my friend says he’s been pooping like crazy but all solid thankfully..

I think she’s realising now just how close she came to loosing him.. He will be monitored very closely over the next week or so..

Are you able to get Fibreplex paste or Biolapis in Ireland?
Either of these might be good to help get his gut back in balance.

I’m curious; is this what you meant by Parsley Root?
                            http://www.mourelatos.com/Parsley_Root.html

I heard of this veg one other time but completely forgot about it. I’ve not seen it locally. I think it’s something my rabbits would really like.

I can check on a few websites for the supplements you mentioned jerseygirl and let my friend know… As for the parsley root. I’ll admit I had a little giggle… The link you posted is for a vegetable we over here call a parsnip its normally boiled with carrots here add a little butter and pepper and mash lovely with a Sunday roast dinner.. Or a lot of people brush on honey and oven roast them..

When I say parsley root I actually mean the herb parsley if you buy the cheap potted kind for your windowsil you can just wash the dirt off and feed the root part for constipation relief..

I was reading that this veg is different again to parsnip. But I’ve never seen it around, though parsnip I have!

However you’ve answered my question. It’s the actual roots of parsley you’d meant. Thank you. : )
