I’m building a new cage for my two bunnies using the NIC cubes but i have no idea what to use for the ramps. My male bunny eats everything, I mean everything, I want something he either can’t chew through or if it’s safe to chew something that won’t be gone in a week. No mater how many chew toys I give him, he only wants to chew on the things he’s not suppose to. I was thinking of just using a side of the nic cube as the ramp and covering it with something to protect their paws but i can’t think of anything that will stand up to his chewing. I could use cardboard but I’d have to replace it often, I was thinking a towel but i don’t think that’ll be soft enough over the grid for them they’re about 9 pounds. I don’t want to use wood because I’m afraid if he chews it they might get splinters in their paws.

I am also planning an NIC cage, for my bun Apollo! I’m not planning on putting ramps in, and letting him jump between the levels. Have you considered this? Or putting a little half step between levels. Using exactly the same method as creating a new floor for the condo.

I like the idea of a half step. A supported NIC grid could be used to do that. To cover, what about a tile that’s the size of a grid? Wall tiles are usually lighter weight then floor ones. If using tile you would have to give the step or ramp adequete support underneath.

This condo shows some smaller intermediate levels instead of a using a ramp.

If the levels are only the height of the NIC grid (14 inches), a healthy rabbit without mobility issues can usually jump that easily. In that case, ramps might be more of a hindrance than a help. One thing, when designing the condo, if it’s more than 2 levels (base + 1 elevated level), make sure to stagger the levels so there is never a drop down further than one level. This can be accomplished by having each level up slightly larger than half the width. For example, if the condo is 3 grids deep and 4 grids long grids, the levels can be 3×3 grids. Of course, you’ll want dowels for support.

This is what I mean in a very primitive way:

                Roof………   ________

                Level 3……. |_____     |

                Level 2……  |     _____|

                Level 1…..   |_______|

Thank you so much, a half step should work fine!
