How can I find out if the ink in the newspaper is soy based, besides calling and asking? Is soy ink a common use? People give me a lot of newspaper because they know I have a rabbit, but ever since I removed the grate from his cage, and he can actually set foot on the newspaper I haven’t actually used any of it yet,(excluding the first time I put it in the cage temporarily) since I don’t know for sure.

Most newspaper is made with soy based ink. And there honestly isn’t a way to really know besides calling someone. Why are you lining his cage with newspaper?

I was going to use it to put underneath his litter box area, but I really want to know because I mainly want to use it as more of a more of a plaything. I read somewhere putting paper in a cardboard tube is a good toy,and I want to make good use of the paper people gave me.

The majority of newspaper ink is soy based now. Note: This does NOT include the “shiny” colored pages, those are still toxic. You can call and ask, or google it if it’s a large brand newspaper. Soy inks tend to rub off way easier than chemical inks (which is why some people still prefer to use the chemical inks) so rub your finger over the page… if it comes off black, it’s probably soy based.

I read somewhere that apart from newspapers we could give our rabbits yellow pages or a phone book to chew/play with. Is it safe?

As long as your bun doesn’t eat too much of the newspaper you’re good. I would use the newspaper as a toy and see how your bun does and how much he chews of it to see if you can trust him with it in his cage.

It’s safe to give your buns phone books. I just make sure to rip the front and back covers off of it before giving it to my buns.

Hm,good idea. Knowing him though, id probably have to give him something to play with to avoid him ripping up the newspaper for fun.

It’s okay for the to rip up newspaper as long as they don’t eat mountains of it. Skipper loves to rip up newspaper. I rip up a bunch of it into strips and stick it in a cardboard box and she goes to town with shredding the paper. I can’t really do that with my Ian because he just tries to eat it. Which isn’t great for him. Do you have a cardboard box for your bun to play in?

Oh plenty. I ger them from a GFS that has large boxes to carry bulk items. I usually rip them up so the buns can play with the cardboard, but I can use some newspaper and shred it into the box.( and I found out the ink is soy!)

That sounds great! Your buns will have a blast with the new toy.
