After last years ordeal with ear infections, Summer was diagnosed with facial paralysis. After reading up on what I could find on the web (which wasn’t much) I’ve come to the conclusion that facial paralysis doesn’t heal, but that acupuncture or pressure may help.. I have been giving her gentle face rubs along the sides of her face thinking it may help, and I think it has. I’m wondering if anyone else has gone through something like this, and has any information that they can give me.

         Thank you!

Thank you very much. It’s definitly not as bad as it could be, she can still eat, but I have to cut her treats and veggies up into little peices as it’s hard for her to open her mouth. But nothing else was effected, so I’m very greatful.

Thank you! I’m not sure if this is the sort of thing that hurts or if it’s just a tight feeling.. but either way I hope so too! I’ll check this out

I was going to mention Horners syndrome too. Glad NewBunny linked that thread.

Bunnywhipped, has your rabbit had head X-rays done before?
What was the treatment for the ear infection? I’m just wondering if the infection is still present (facial paralysis can be a symptom).

jerseygirl, she has never had a head X-ray as it is very expensive. We did do a culture and sensitivity swab however, after finding that Baytril was not effective. We went in for CBC blood tests every week. After the culture tests came back, we found the infection was caused by strep, and that it was treatable with Amikacin injections which I administered twice a day for ten days. After the treatment, we did two CBC tests. The first showed it was still slightly there, and the next showed it was gone. I sure hope it’s still gone..

When did the paralysis come on?

We noticed her face being lopsided at the same time as we rushed her to the vet for not eating, pooping, drinking, etc. Which turned out to be the ear infection. One vet didn’t know what it was, and the other told me what it was, yet didn’t do anything.

I’m so sorry to hear about Summer’s problems . It’s true that nerve damage can be very difficult to recover from, but face rubs are certainly worth a shot. However, it’s definitely good that other cranial nerves were not affected, so that the rest of her functions are intact.

It doesn’t sound to me like she has Horner’s Syndrome, which isn’t so much a disease as a group of three symptoms that tend to occur together, and can be cause by many different things.

I just want to offer my well wishes for your sweet bunny. I don’t have any experience with this myself, although I do have a bunny with chronic ear infections. It certainly sounds like she is getting the best possible care.

Thank you, I’m very glad nothing else was affected, and that I can rule out Horner’s

Thank you very much. Oh dear, I hope your bun is feeling alright. That seems much worse than a little paralysis
