Hello! My bunny has started shedding his fur pretty heavily and ever since it got bad he has been chewing on things like crazy, pooping outside of his litter box, and today he is hiding in his cage not coming out. He is eating and pooping (not always in his box which concerns me) and the only thing I can think of that might be causing this behaviour is the fact that he is shedding. Has this happened to anyone else? I sat with him for probably 20 minutes yesterday pulling out fur…but I know that there is going to be a lot more coming out. Should I be concerned? The only reason I’m not super worried is because he is eating and pooping fine.

          How old is he?

I ask because bunnies that pull fur are females that are not spayed. Females that are not spayed have false pregnancies are pull out fur to make a nest.

My bunny gets cranky when she is going through a shed, but has never pulled out her own fur.

It certainly can make them cranky.

Has his hay intake dropped at all?

YES! My female bun gets really grumpy when she’s molting. Sometimes, she doesn’t even want to come out for play time she just wants to be grumpy in her house.

Thanks for the replies! Sorry chacha I meant I was pulling out fur for him…he doesn’t like to be brushed so I just pet/yank and fur comes out easily when he is shedding. I am glad that others have had similar experiences so I don’t have to worry too much…he is just being cranky! I feel bad for him that he will be going through this every few months. His hay intake has not dropped and he has actually decided to stop pouting in his cage and is out and about.

I think their pride is hurt because they look so mangey.
I dislike when they shed. Makes me grumpy too.
