My rabbit shuii first started off with a grated cage, and underneath it,I put a plastic bag, and newspaper down because it would be oput of his reach, and it was easy to just wrap it up and throw it away.however,he started getting heavy,so I removed the grate and put him on the actual flat surface of the cage.I put a plastic bag, newspaper, and bedding down hoping the beding would cover the newspaper well. But he ended up tearing it up,and trying to eat some,so I took it out and just put in plastic bag and bedding.he did well in this, but when he gets bored at night,or when he’s in his cage while I’m at school,he scratches the plastic bag up,trying to get to the bottom of the cage. I don’t really wanna let him onto the bottom of the cage because I haven’t got him a bunny litter box yet,and scrubbing the cage ev erytime I change it would be a hassle.

        Any ideas?

A Plastic bag is not safe at all in a cage. Use bedding until you can get a litter box

But what will I do about the cleanup? I don’t mind cleaning the cage, its just scrubbing it every time I change the cage is more often than I usually do a scrub-down.( which is usually every 3-4 changes)

Yeah, don’t use a plastic bag. Very bad if they get a chance to eat it!
It’s okay for them to scratch up the newspaper and eat a little (if it’s soy based ink). I’d just avoid plastic all together.

Litter boxes can be found anywhere… can you use something else for a little bit? I just got my litter box from the dollar store for $2, could you quickly make a trip to some place like that?

I looked in the dollar stores near me,and they don’t have rabbit litter boxes.but they have the food.I can only find them in the petstore in the next town over, since I don’t really have a local petstore that stocks very much small animal care items. But I definetly won’t use the plastic anymore.

Is there anything I can use as a makeshift litter box? I’m still a teenager,so I don’t really have the freedom to go to the next town anytime I want…

I use one of those dish washing pans people use in their sinks, cost about $5.00 at walmart.

I honestly used a large Tupperware container for the longest time while Skipper was a baby until she out grew it. When she did I ended up buying the litter pan with the screen from BB. It really helped me save money on litter.

I found a large washbin in my bathroom and cleaned it,put it in his favorite litter corner, then put his soiled bedding in it.Ardelt,thanks. as soon as I put it in and cleaned his cage,he sniffed it,then used it. He may not use it all the time, but its a good start!

I’m worried about you mentioning the dollar store has food for your bunny… good quality rabbit food will not be found in dollar stores

Ditto Monkey. Also, the bunny has full access to hay right?

no, no, I don’t get it from the dollar store,I was just saying that’s all they have there. I get the food from petstores or from walmart.(same with bedding)

And yes,he has access to hay.I make sure its always in his cage. I put some beside his litter since they poop and eat a lot.

Get a cat litterbox. Rabbit/small animal litterboxes are too small for long-term use. A medium size cat box (about 10×16 inches) works well and can be found anywhere as mentioned: Target, Walmart, Kmart, etc…
