I thought I should stop lurking and properly introduce myself and Nigel the wonder bunny. These forums are a great source of information and I’ve been reading them steadily since I brought Nigel home for the shelter in July. I’m not sure how old he is but I’m guessing he is about a year and a half (he was caught by animal control agents so I’m guessing someone threw him away once he reached puberty and started acting out). His breed is a mystery as well (any guesses would be welcome) he is mostly black with some brown on his belly and throat with greyish paws, his fur is so soft and shiny I suspect he might be part satin.

I’ve been a cat owner all my 40+ years but allergies and a husband who just doesn’t get cats forced me to look for alternatives, after some research I decided a rabbit would suit our household perfectly and reality has far exceeded my expectations! My husband has fallen in love with Nigel as well the house wouldn’t be the same without him.

I’ve had great success clicker training him and so far he has about 15 different tricks he will perform. Really he will do anything for a treat so he is easily to work with and it really help us to bond very quickly. Plus he really enjoys it, my next goal is to construct a wee obstacle course for him to encourage him to run around and exercise.

Well I could go on and on but I’m sure that’s enough, hi everyone!

Sorry about the sideways picture after 15 minutes I gave up, and it was too cute to leave out.

Definitely too cute to leave out! . He’s lovely and his fur looks so satiny soft!

Looking forward to hearing more about Nigel. He sounds smart!

That first pic had me thinking he must be part Flemish giant with those ears but I think it was just the camera angle. They don’t look as large in the second one. Do you know his weight?
Do his ears always go out to the side? Maybe he has some lop in his mix…

His ears are typical rabbit ears but when he is content they often drop sideways, like tv antenna.

He actually looks bigger than he is in the pictures he only weighs a little over five pounds, about the size of small house cat.

And yes I think he is very smart, but I’m VERY biased.

I’m glad you came and introduced yourself. Nigel is stunning! Those ears!!!

15 tricks! That’s pretty impressive. Sounds like he has totally won you guys over to bunnies, as they tend to do.

Oh he certainly has, we are looking at building in the next few years and I’ve convinced my hubby that our new house will need to have a bunny room in the floor plans.

I should clarify about the tricks though, several of them are variations of a theme, throw, the ball, toss the ring, that sort of thing, basically grab it and toss your head around. But he loves to play.

His ears are so long, looks like he has wings! I also have a long eared bunny, but hers don’t droop down like that so they’re not as cute . His black coat is gorgeous, hope you post more pics later.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! I’d love to post more pictures but he is so dark that my fleshless iPad doesn’t do him justice, I’ll try taking some during the day this weekend.

Natural sunlight coming through the windows is the best lighting for photographs, the pics will be gorgeous! Would you mind recording some of the tricks that Nigel can do too? I just want to get some ideas for when I start clicker training…

I’d be happy to post a video, do you know if I can do so through these forums or would I need to post it on You Tube and post the link here?

Here’s some information from BB about posting in the Videos section:

I think uploading on Youtube would be the easiest and fastest way to share a video. Google owns Youtube so if you have a Gmail account, you already have a Youtube account.

Thanks I’ll upload a short video I have to you tube and add the link. Since it has to do with clicker training I’ll start a new thread.
