        Hi Guys!

This might be a bit of an odd question.. but.. in my household we have two cockatiels and Bear, my mini lop, loves to run around the cage and eat all of the bird seed that has dropped onto the floor.

Is it okay for him to eat these small amounts?
Can he pick up any diseases or anything from the birds?

Also.. he has taken a liking to an orchid plant that is on the ground and I’ve found him nibbling on the leaves. Will this cause him any harm? I’m in the process of teaching him not to touch it, but he’s very persistent.

        Thanks!

Orchid is safe. For future references, here’s a list of toxic plants. I wouldn’t let him eat the seeds. Perhaps get a guard for the side of the bird cage so seeds won’t fall to the floor?

A seed or two isn’t going to do much harm, but do your best to keep him from eating them. They aren’t good for bunnies, very fattening. I like the idea of a seed guard. I don’t know of any diseases that can go from bird to bun, but I suppose you never know.

I don’t think he can pick anything up from a cockateil – I have one and have had numerous friends w/cockateils and rabbits and it’s not a problem.

Seeds, really not good so best to discourage bun from eating them. It’s hard to manage seed spillage too with birds being so messy – I’ve never heard of a seed guard, but I may have to take a look at that but not sure how effective it could be since the cockateil seed flinging seems indiscriminate.

Sarita is right about the guards. We had a parrot that would throw tomatoes at us as we walked by and it didn’t catch all of the debris he’d fling but it did make a difference

I have a cockatiel and seed guards do work well (get the clear plastic ones you wrap around half the cage, not the metal that is angled) but what I do to make sure the buns can’t get ANY seeds and the bird has a “safe spot” to floor forage away from rabbits chasing him is I have the cage gated off. You can make a little NIC cube cage around the bird cage and if you feed the birds in/on top of their cage, it should keep the seed contained. My buns never get seeds and my bird likes to tease the rabbits by standing right next to the gate and they’ll sniff him and poke their nose into it and act all upset they can’t get past. lol
