Brought him to the vet yesterday. Another ear infection. Ugh….I was REALLY hoping it was not but would have been surprised had they not been. The last couple of weeks his ears have been more full of gook than usual but I didn’t suspect an infection because he normally gets a foul smell to his ears when they are infected. Over the weekend he started scratching and was unwilling to let me clean his right ear so I made an appointment.

It wasn’t my usual rabbit vet as she’s away. Another Dr. in the clinic sees rabbits but is not the rabbit expert, but she’s really nice and helpful. She said there was quite a bit of bacteria in both, especially the right. Baytril Otic 2x daily for 10 days, then recheck.

I also mentioned that his right eye has been a bit weepy and upon inspection with a light, she noticed a scratch underneath his upper eye lid. She gave me some drops: Tobradex, 2x daily for 10 days. Never used this. Anyone have any info on it?

I feel like a really bad Bunny Mommy. Usually, I catch his ear infections quick before there is a lot of bacteria. But since there was no smell, I put it off and now I’m really worried about the Baytril being ineffective as well as my fears of headtilt. Since he gets so many ear infections, I worry about the ears becoming immune to the Baytril. Then not sure what we will do. I will e-mail my rabbit vet later this week. She attended an exotic vet conference in January and she said she was going to try to find out about what drops we could use to replace the discontinued drops that we were using for maintenance that worked so well to prevent infections. Still super ticked they discontinued something that obviously works.

Sorry for the rant, just worried and feel bad. Ear vibes please.

One good part of my vet visit was I got to see baby bunnies! I’ve never seen bunnies under a couple of months old and these were born on Valentines Day. A lady fostering a bunny for the SPCA brought in a bun to get neutered. Turns out “he” was a “she” a few days away from giving birth so my vet kept the bunny at the clinic. 7 little babies! Squee! I’m in love with them all! They were sleeping and so sweet! And there are baby guinea pigs that were born a day after the buns; similar circumstance. Super cute, running around and “boui bouing”. One of each, please.

I think you did just the right thing making an appt. for Bindi Loo with your vet’s sub. Of course you didn’t react as soon without a smell. We only have so many subtle clues to help us where bunnies are concerned, and it’s as hard on them to continue to be seen and treated for false alarms as it is to go unnoticed.
I like the idea of emailing your vet later this week. I am sure her assoc. will fill her in, but, being treated for 10 days, she may not hear much about Bindi if she’s dealing with new emergencies after her return. Touch base with her to say you’ll continue for 10 days unless she wants you to stop by and try something new and different.

Glad you have something for his eye, too. You mentioned that before, and I only ever used one type of cream eye drop on Spockie years ago, but it worked very well. Not the name you mentioned, but sounds like a good treatment for a small eye wound.

            Vibes for Bindi!

There are some newer generations of baytril that you can also inquire about from your vet – I just got Zeniquin for Toffee which I only have to give once per day instead of twice per day like baytril.

I’m just seeing this LPT All the best and brightest vibes for Bindi to recover fully and quickly!
I wouldn’t worry too much about the baytril…remember Mimzy was on it for almost four months until we started to see any sign of resistance. I’d put him on it again in a heartbeat if he needed it.
I do wonder if the ear drops are as effective as the oral, but I’d follow up with your regular vet on that.
I haven’t heard of the eye ointment. The eye is a very quickly recovering organ and it should heal up fast, you just don’t want it to be infected while it heals.

Don’t beat yourself up about not catching it right away. These things happen. I’m sure he’ll be back to himself in no time. (((((((hugs))))))))
I owe you an email. I’ll try working on it tonight. I hope everything else is going well.

Honestly, I think you did well catching the infection just from him scratching.

Were you able to find out if Neosporin Ophthalmic drops were an option?

I’m wondering why the vet prescribed another med for the eye. Couldn’t the baytril drops be used for that too? (im thinking the baytril drops an ear and eye solution).

Bindi had his vet appt. on Saturday. The poor guy was really stressed out. Usually, he’s not too upset by the vet trips, he’s pretty much an old pro. Still a bit of bacteria in both ears but the impacted gunk is all gone so that’s good. 7 more days of Baytril. It still wasn’t my rabbit vet so I’m going to e-mail her this week to discuss things.

His eye is still pretty runny. And the other eye is a bit runny too so I’m not sure if it was due to the eyelid scratch or not. She said to continue the drops for 7 more days and call if it doesn’t clear up. I’m REALLY hoping it’s not due to his teeth since he just had them done in early January. The poor guy needs a break from health problems and so does his Mom.

Poor dude – continued vibes. The tears could be from his teeth unfortunately – it may be the tooth root overgrowth.

I’m sorry to see he’s still having trouble with his eyes. I agree with Sarita it could be roots, but I hope not. Mimzy is about a three month dental bun, but hasn’t had one since he got head tilt in June last year. I dread to find what state his mouth is in when I can finally get him in.
I hope this can be cleared up easily LPT. (((((((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))))))

                                  Thanks, Mimz.

I’m going to wait out the 7 days and then will contact the vet. His eyes are still pretty runny. I’m hoping my rabbit vet will be back by that time.

I’m not that knowledgeable about bunny teeth problems. The only thing we’ve dealt with is molar spurs. What is “tooth rooth overgrowth”?

Vet appointment tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon. His eyes are still runny, especially the right one. And I’m also concerned about a possible respiratory problem. He has always been a squeaky breather but lately it seems louder. He’s also making wheezing sounds when he eats sometimes this past week. Very worried about my little man. And then there’s still the matter of his ears. They still look quite irritated and gunky.

Thankfully, it’s my rabbit vet tomorrow who is popping in for the day. They squeezed him in since he’s a VIB. That’s sort of a joke around the vet. Bindi the VIB.

Prayers/vibes needed please. Worried about my little man.

I’m glad your rabbit vet will be there tomorrow. It’s always good to see the person who knows your bunnies best. Just wish they never had to take time off!

((((((((((((((((Huge hugs)))))))))))))))) for you. What a worry. I hope he will be feeling better soon.

ETA: Tooth root overgrowth is when the roots of the molars begin to grow up into the upper portion of the jaw and towards the eye sockets. You’ll have to talk to your vet about the prognosis on this as it’s specific to each bun, of course.

Thanks, everyone. The vibes worked. Bindi made out great. Ears got the all clear. She checked his mouth with the ottoscope and didn’t see anything. She palpated his cheeks and said if there was something going on there in his mouth, he probably would have reacted. She saw some inflammation in his right eye and suspects that’s residue from the injury/scratch and that the tear duct is blocked as a result. She said since it’s not real runny, if it’s still blocked the next time he goes in for a dental, she will flush his tear duct but doesn’t want to put him under just for that.

She checked his breathing and heart and said all sounded wonderful.

Saw the babies again who are now 5 weeks old. Sadly, another passed away. :*( My vet was trying to convince me to adopt one. I said “Talk to my husband here.” OMG, I want one though. There is one who is coloured like Stormy and I’m pretty sure will be a Harlequin. WANT! 6 Months today since I lost my little angel.
